Hadith 47

Ibn Abd Khair narrates from his father: I saw Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) wiping over the upper part of the foot, and he was saying: If I had not seen the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over the upper part, I would have thought that the lower part is more deserving of being wiped over.

Imam Humaydi (may Allah have mercy on him) states: If this incident is regarding wiping over leather socks (khuffs), then it is Sunnah, and if it is other than the leather socks, then this ruling is "abrogated."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Ibrahim bin Basheer
Benefit ◄ The method for wiping (masah) over leather socks (khuffayn) and regular socks is that a wet hand should be passed over their upper surface; wiping underneath the socks is not established. The manner of wiping is not specifically defined—whatever action is considered wiping applies, whether one wipes from the top of the foot towards the toes, or starts from the toes and moves upwards. And Allah knows best what is correct. Wiping over the feet (instead of washing) is established from the Qur’an and Hadith; it is regrettable that some enemies of Islam invent their own laws. May Allah grant them guidance.
