Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Who will narrate to us a hadith about tribulations (fitnah)?” So I said: I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “A man is tested through his wife, his wealth, and his neighbor. Praying, giving charity, and fasting become an expiation for that.” Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I did not ask you about this; I am asking you about the tribulation which will surge like the waves of the sea. I said: Between you and it is a closed door, which will be in the form of a man being killed or passing away. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: “Will that door be broken or will it be opened?” I said: No, rather it will be broken. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Then it will not be closed until the Day of Resurrection.” A’mash says: Due to awe, we could not ask Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) whether Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) knew that he himself was meant by the door, so we said this to Masruq and he asked Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Yes! Just as you know that tonight will come before tomorrow. The reason is that I narrated to him a hadith in which there was no mistake.
