408 - حَدَّثَنَا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ قَالَ: ثنا سُفْيَانُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْأَعْمَشَ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ شَقِيقَ بْنَ سَلَمَةَ أَبَا وَائِلٍ يَقُولُ: لَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ صِفِّينَ وَحَكَمَ الْحَكَمَانِ سَمِعْتُ سَهْلَ بْنَ حُنَيْفٍ يَقُولُ: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّهِمُوا رَأْيَكُمْ، وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ أَبِي جَنْدَلٍ وَلَوْ نَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ نَرُدَّ عَلَي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمْرَهُ لَرَدَدْنَاهُ، وَايْمُ اللَّهِ مَا وَضَعْنَا سُيُوفَنَا عَلَي عَوَاتِقِنَا مُنْذُ أَسْلَمْنَا لِأَمْرٍ يُفْظِعُنَا إِلَّا أَسْهَلَتْ بِنَا إِلَي أَمْرٍ نَعْرِفُهُ، وَإِنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ وَاللَّهِ مَا سُدَّ فِيهِ خُصْمٌ إِلَّا انْفَتَحَ عَلَيْنَا مِنْهُ خُصْمٌ آخَرُ "
Abu Wa'il Shafiq bin Salamah narrates: On the occasion of the Battle of Siffin, when arbitrators from both sides gave their decision, I heard Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunaif (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: "O people! Declare your opinion to be wrong. I remember that we were also with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) on that day when Abu Jandal came. If we had wanted, we would not have accepted the word of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). By Allah! Since we accepted Islam, we have never put our swords on our shoulders because of any matter that frightened us, except that it was made easy for us and we were turned to another matter which we knew. As for this matter, by Allah! If one side of it is closed, it will open from the other side."
