Musnad al-Humaydi

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abu Hathma (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) was found murdered at the edge of a well in Khaybar (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words) or at the edge of a pit. So his brother, Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him), and his two paternal uncles, Sayyiduna Huwayyisa bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Muhayyisa bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman began to speak, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Let the elder speak first, let the elder speak first.” So Sayyiduna Muhayyisa (may Allah be pleased with him) began to speak. He mentioned the killing of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: O Messenger of Allah! We found Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) murdered, and the Jews are disbelievers and people of broken covenants; they must have killed him. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Then fifty men from you should swear an oath and you will become entitled to the blood of your companion (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words) to the blood of your companion.” They said: O Messenger of Allah! How can we swear an oath against those people when we were not present there, and we did not see it? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Then fifty men from the Jews will swear an oath and they will be acquitted from you.” They said: How can we accept the oaths of a polytheist people? The narrator states: So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave them blood money from his own side. Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: One of the young she-camels among them kicked me on the leg.
