Hadith 40

Abu Hujayfah narrates: I asked Sayyiduna Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him): Do you have anything besides the Qur’an that you received from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He replied: No, by Him who split the grain and created the soul, (we have nothing like that) except for what Allah grants understanding of to any of His servants regarding His Book, or what is contained in this scroll. I asked: What is in this scroll? Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: (It contains rulings) about blood money, about freeing captives, and (the ruling) that no Muslim will be killed in retaliation for a disbeliever.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefit:
In this hadith, it is mentioned that even during the time of Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu, some people spread false things about him. Among these was the claim that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had granted him “inner knowledge” (‘ilm al-batin). Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu himself refuted this false belief and clarified that what he possessed was an understanding of the Noble Qur’an, and that he had some ahadith. These included: the rulings of retribution (qisas), the rulings regarding the freeing of captives, and that no Muslim will be killed in retaliation for a disbeliever. Similarly, some people have attributed “the knowledge of jafr” (‘ilm al-jafr) to Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu, through which, in their imagination, people come to know hidden matters of the past and future. All of this is superstition and baseless, and there is no mention of it in the Qur’an and hadith. Deviant sects, in order to prove their false ideas and beliefs, resort to strange and fabricated stories—may Allah Ta’ala protect us from them, ameen.
