Hadith 394

Sayyiduna Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The exchange of gold for gold will be equal for equal. The exchange of silver for silver will be equal for equal. The exchange of dates for dates will be equal for equal. The exchange of wheat for wheat will be equal for equal. The exchange of barley for barley will be equal for equal, until the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) specifically mentioned the exchange of salt for salt as well (and said): Whoever gives more or demands more, then this is usury.”

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Ibrahim bin Basheer
Benefit:
In this hadith, an important principle of buying and selling is stated: that it is permissible to sell two identical items in exchange for each other, but with certain conditions:
➊ They must be equal in weight; if more is taken in weight, then this will be usury (riba).
➋ The transaction must be hand to hand (immediate exchange). When one wishes to take a superior item in exchange for an inferior one, or an inferior item in exchange for a superior one—even though their type (jins) is the same but there is a difference in quality—then one should sell his own item in the market, and then purchase the other item with its price, so that he does not fall into a prohibited act.
