Hadith 38

Abdullah bin Abu Juhayh narrates from his father: That person informed me who heard Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) saying this, Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I intended to send a marriage proposal to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for his daughter, then I remembered that I had nothing. Then I thought of the greatness and virtue of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), so I sent a marriage proposal (for Sayyida Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) asked me: Do you have anything which you can give her (as dowry)? I replied: No! The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Where is your Hatimiyyah armor, which I gave you on such and such occasion? I replied: It is with me. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Bring that. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I brought it and gave the armor to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), so the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) married me to Sayyida Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). When she was sent to my house, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Do not talk to each other until I come to you both. Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) came to us, we had a sheet (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words) or a blanket over us. When we saw the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), we started to enter into it, but he (peace be upon him) said: Both of you stay in your places! Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) asked for a vessel in which there was water, then he (peace be upon him) supplicated over it (i.e., recited something and blew on it), then he (peace be upon him) sprinkled it on us. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Is she (i.e., Sayyida Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her) more beloved to you, or am I? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: She is more beloved to me than you, and you are more honorable to me than her. The same narration is transmitted with another chain, however, in it are these words: The narrator heard Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) saying this on the pulpit of Kufa.

Benefit:
In this hadith, the marriage of Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu is mentioned, highlighting the simplicity with which he married Sayyidah Fatimah radi Allahu anha. It is also established that the dowry (mahr) should be set according to whatever is available. In the present era, marriages are being conducted in ways that are contrary to the golden teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah; we are not prepared to abandon any customs or traditions. If only Muslims would strive to live their lives according to the life of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, there would be nothing but peace. When the marriage of the leader of the women of Paradise, the beloved daughter of the Leader of the Prophets, can take place with such simplicity, then why are the marriages of our daughters conducted with such pomp, extravagance, and Hindu-like customs and traditions? It is regrettable that today’s Muslim has made marriages expensive and fornication easy.
