Zirr bin Hubaish says: I said to Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him): Your brother, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), says: Whoever performs voluntary prayers throughout the year, only he can attain Laylat al-Qadr. So Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: May Allah have mercy on Abu Abdur Rahman; his intention is that people should not rely on (any one specific night) and become complacent, otherwise he also knows that it is in the last ten nights of Ramadan, and it is the twenty-seventh night. Then Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) swore an oath without any exception and stated that it is the twenty-seventh night. We requested him: O Abu al-Mundhir! How did you come to know this? He replied: Because of the sign (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words) or the indication about which the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us that "on the morning following that night, when the sun rises, it has no rays."

Zirr (b. Hubaish) said: I said to Ubayy bin Kab: Tell me about lailat al-qard, O Abu al-Mundhir, for our companion (Ibn Masud) was questioned about it, and he said: Anyone who gets up for prayer every night all the year round will hit upon it (i. e. lailat al-qadr). He replied: May Allah have mercy on Abu Abdur-Rahman. By Allah, he knew that it was in Ramadan, (Musaddad's version goes) bu he disliked that the people should content themselves (with that night alone) ; or he liked that the people should not content themselves (with the night alone). According to the agreed version: By Allah, it is the twenty-seventh night of Ramadan, without any reservation. I said: How did you know that, Abu al-Mundhir ? He replied: By the indication (or sign) of which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed us. I asked Zirr: What is the sign ? He replied: The sun rises like a vessel of water in the morning following that night ; it has no ray until it rises high up.

1378. Commentary: ➊ Worship during Laylat al-Qadr is superior to the worship of a thousand months compared to other nights. [لَيْلَةُالْقَدْرِخَيْرٌمِّنْأَلْفِشَهْرٍ] [القدر۔3] And this period amounts to eighty-three years and four months. ➋ If it is claimed with certainty that this night always occurs on the twenty-seventh of Ramadan, then this is absolutely incorrect. Rather, it is only a possibility. Similarly, it is possible for it to occur on other odd nights as well. ➌ Although the mentioned signs appear only after the night has passed, the benefit in this is that if a person has availed himself of this night, he should be grateful; and if he was deprived, he should aspire for it in the future. ➍ This sign must have appeared to Ubayy ibn Ka'b radi Allahu anhu on the morning of the twenty-seventh in a particular year, and from this he became convinced that Laylat al-Qadr is always on this night every year. However, the correct view is that Laylat al-Qadr continues to move among the odd nights of the last ten (nights of Ramadan).
