Hadith 36

Ibn Abu Dhibab narrates from his father regarding Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him): His father says: Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) led four rak‘ahs of prayer in Mina, so people objected to him. He said: When I came here, I made it my home because of my wife, and I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When a man marries in a city, he should perform the prayer like a resident of that place."

Explanation & Benefits

Benefit:
This hadith is not authentic. It states that Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu used to perform the full prayer (i.e., four rak‘ahs) in Mina and would explain the reason by saying: “I am staying here with my family, ever since I arrived here. I heard the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam say that whoever stays in a city with his family should perform the prayer of a settled person.” Although this narration is weak, it is established that Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu initially used to perform only two rak‘ahs in Mina, but after some time during his caliphate, he began to perform the full prayer in Mina. (Sahih al-Bukhari: 1082, 1083, 1084). For a detailed discussion on this, refer to (Fath al-Bari: 3/470, 472). The correct view is that only two rak‘ahs should be performed in Mina, as was the practice of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and the other noble Companions radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in.
