Hadith 35

Humran, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates: Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) performed ablution three times at the place of "Maqa'id" and stated: I saw the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performing ablution in this manner. Then Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "Whoever performs ablution well, then offers prayer, Allah Almighty forgives the sins committed between that prayer and the next prayer, as long as he does not perform the next prayer."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Ibrahim bin Basheer
Benefit:
In this hadith, washing the limbs of ablution (wudu) three times each is mentioned; washing more than this is prohibited. It is also established from this that prayer is an expiation for sins. The sins committed between one prayer and the next are forgiven. This hadith is detailed in Sahih al-Bukhari (159), in which Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu performed a complete ablution (wudu) and then narrated this hadith. There are countless hadiths regarding the virtues of performing prayer, of which only one narration is mentioned here: It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that I heard the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam say: «أرأيتم لو أن نهرا بباب أحدكم يغتسل فيه كل يوم خمسا ما تقول ذلك يبقى من درنه » “Tell me, if there were a river flowing at the door of one of you and he bathed in it five times a day, would any dirt remain on his body?” The companions radi Allahu anhum said: No dirt would remain on his body. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: «فــذلك مثل الصلوات الخمس يمحو الله به الخطايا» “This is the example of the five prayers; Allah the Exalted wipes away sins through them.” (Sahih al-Bukhari: 528, Sahih Muslim: 667)
