Sayyida Umm Qais bint Mihsan (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I brought my son to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). I had rubbed his throat because of swelling in his throat. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why do you cause pain to your children by rubbing their throats like this? It is obligatory upon you to use Indian aloeswood (oud al-hindi), for it contains seven types of cures. In the case of swelling in the throat, it should be administered through the nose, and in the case of pleurisy, it should be dripped under the tongue." Zuhri says: The narrator named Ubaydullah mentioned two things but did not mention the remaining five (i.e., for which other five diseases is it a cure?). Imam Humaydi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: By 'oud al-hindi' is meant 'qist'.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Ibrahim bin Basheer
Benefit: From this hadith, it is understood that the treatment for a child's throat ailment should be done according to the Sunnah method, and that is to insert Indian aloeswood (oud al-hindi) into the nose. This removes the disease of the throat. However, some people press the child's throat with their finger, even though this causes the child to suffer and the person also becomes guilty of opposing the Sunnah. Indian aloeswood (oud al-hindi) should be ground and mixed with water or oil, and then inserted into the nose. In this way, the medicine automatically reaches the throat and the child finds relief. Furthermore, from this hadith, the importance and virtue of Indian aloeswood (oud al-hindi) is also established, as it has been made a cure for several diseases. Indian aloeswood is a fragrant wood that has a slight roughness; chewing it improves the teeth, and its use also facilitates urination and menstruation. Muslims should be mindful of adhering to the Qur'an and Hadith in matters of medicine.
