343 - حَدَّثَنَا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ قَالَ: ثنا سُفْيَانُ قَالَ: ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي يَزِيدَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبِي يَقُولُ: نَزَلْتُ عَلَي أُمِّ أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيَّةِ فَأَخْبَرَتْنِي أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «نَزَلَ الْقُرْآنُ عَلَي سَبْعَةِ أَحْرُفٍ أَيَّهَا قَرَأْتَ أَصَبْتَ»
Ubaidullah bin Abu Yazid narrates from his father: I stayed with Sayyida Umm Ayyub Ansariyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), so she told me, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Qur'an was revealed upon seven modes (ahruf); whichever of them you recite will be correct."

From this hadith, the proof of the seven modes of recitation (qira’at sab‘ah) is established, and this is an authoritative evidence; there is no doubt or uncertainty in this matter. What is meant here are the various recitations (qira’at), and the science of qira’at is an independent discipline. There are numerous detailed and concise books on this subject. The early reciters (qurra’) have done extensive work on it, and every single mode of recitation is established with authentic chains of transmission. All praise is due to Allah!
