Hadith 334

Sayyida Umm Hani (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: On the occasion of the conquest of Makkah, I saw the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he covered himself with a cloth, threw it over his shoulders in the opposite direction, and performed eight units of prayer.

Benefit:
It is established from this hadith that performing eight rak‘ahs of the Duha prayer (Salat al-Duha) is also Sunnah. The conquest of Makkah was a tremendous blessing from Allah, and as an expression of gratitude for this, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed eight rak‘ahs of the Duha prayer. Furthermore, it is also understood that one should be diligent in performing the Duha prayer both while traveling and at home. Even two rak‘ahs of the Duha prayer are established (Sahih al-Bukhari: 721). In fact, the importance of this can be gauged from the fact that the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam advised Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu regarding three matters, one of which was that he should never leave the two rak‘ahs of the Duha prayer (Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah: 7083).

In another hadith, it is mentioned that every joint of a person is due a charity every morning, and the charity for all these limbs (joints) is the two rak‘ahs of the Duha prayer (Sahih Muslim: 720).

The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said that whoever performs two rak‘ahs after sunrise will receive the full reward of Hajj and ‘Umrah (Sunan al-Tirmidhi: 586, its chain is authentic).

The Duha prayer and the Ishraq prayer are two separate prayers. The evidence for this is the following hadith:

The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would perform two rak‘ahs after the sun had risen, then pause, and when the sun had risen high by the time of Duha, he would then perform four rak‘ahs (Sunan al-Tirmidhi: 475, its chain is hasan). It should be noted that the time for the Ishraq prayer begins after sunrise, and when the sun’s heat becomes somewhat intense, the time for the Duha prayer begins, and it lasts until the sun begins to decline (zawal).
