Hadith 32

The son of Sulayman bin Yasar narrates from his father regarding Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him): He delivered a sermon to the people at the place of "Jabiyah" and said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood among us just as I am standing among you. He (peace be upon him) said: "Honor my companions! Then those who come after them, then those who come after them. Then falsehood will become widespread, to the extent that a man will give testimony though it was not requested from him, and he will swear an oath though it was not asked of him. Beware! Whenever a man is alone with a woman, the third among them is the devil. Beware! Whoever wishes to reside in Paradise should remain with the (Muslim) community, for the devil is with the solitary person and is farther from two people. Beware! Whoever is pleased by his good deed and saddened by his bad deed, he is a believer."

The important points mentioned in this hadith are as follows:
➊ It is obligatory to respect the noble Companions (Sahabah). The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: «دعـوالـى أصحابي ، لا تسبوا أصحابي» For my sake, overlook my Companions (radi Allahu anhum); do not speak ill of my Companions. (Musnad al-Bazzar: 294/3, Hadith: 2779, Kashf al-Astar. Al-Haythami said: Its narrators are those of the authentic collections, Majma‘ al-Zawa’id: 10/21) In another hadith narrated from our master Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (radi Allahu anhu), the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: « إذا ذكر أصـحـابـي فأمسكوا ، وإذا ذكر النجوم فأمسكوا ، وإذا ذكر القدر فأمسكوا» When my Companions are mentioned, remain silent; when the stars are mentioned, remain silent; and when destiny (qadar) is mentioned, remain silent. (Tabarani, al-Sahihah: 34) On this important topic, among the books of my respected teacher, the hadith scholar of our era, Irshad al-Haqq Athari (rahimahullah), “Maqam Sahabah,” “Mushajarat Sahabah,” and “Adalat Sahabah” are extremely important. In these, some baseless doubts and suspicions have also been addressed with research.
➋ In this hadith, the respect for the Tabi‘in and Taba‘ Tabi‘in has also been emphasized, and these three generations have been described as the best. After these golden three generations, falsehood, trials, and corruption will become widespread.
➌ By “Jama‘ah” is not meant the present-day paper organizations, but rather the Jama‘ah refers to that group which will be under the Khalifah of the Muslims, and all the Muslims of the world will have a single Khalifah, just as it was in the era of the four Rightly Guided Caliphs. Now, when ‘Isa (alayhis salam) comes, he will be the Khalifah, and he will come in the capacity of a follower (ummah) of the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
