Hadith 297

Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman narrates: Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Madinah Munawwarah. He was present on the pulpit. He said to Kathir bin Salt: Go to Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and ask her about the prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) which he used to perform two rak'ahs after Asr. Abu Salamah says: I also went with Kathir bin Salt. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) sent Abdullah bin Harith along with us and said: Go! Listen to whatever Umm al-Mu'mineen tells you. Abu Salamah says: That person went to her and asked her about this, so Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I have no knowledge about this. Go to Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) and ask her. So I also went with Kathir to Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her). He asked Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) about this, so Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to my house after Asr and performed two rak'ahs of prayer at my place. I had not seen him perform these two rak'ahs before. So I asked: O Messenger of Allah! How did you perform this prayer today? I have not seen you perform it before. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I perform two rak'ahs after Dhuhr. The delegation of Banu Tamim came to me" (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words) "or the wealth of Zakat had come, so I was occupied, so these are those same two rak'ahs."

Benefit:
From this hadith, it is established that performing two units (rak‘ahs) of prayer after the ‘Asr prayer is Sunnah. Those who claim that these rak‘ahs are specific to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) will be required to provide evidence for this claim. There is no evidence for its being specific, whereas it is also established from the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in) that they performed these two rak‘ahs. It is authentically reported from Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Zubayr (radi Allahu anhuma) that he performed two rak‘ahs after the ‘Asr prayer. (Sahih al-Bukhari: 1231) Furthermore, it is also established from this that making up (qada) missed voluntary (nafl) and Sunnah rak‘ahs is permissible. This hadith demonstrates the importance of Sunnah rak‘ahs.

It is not correct for some people to neglect the observance of Sunnah rak‘ahs. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) missed the two rak‘ahs after the Zuhr prayer only once in his lifetime, but he made them up, and thereafter, for the rest of his life, he consistently performed two rak‘ahs after the ‘Asr prayer. If the Sunnah rak‘ahs of a prayer are missed due to some excuse, then it is permissible to perform them either before or after the next prayer, in both cases.
