Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When any one of you women has a mukatab slave and he possesses the amount (of money) which he can pay, then that woman should observe veil from that slave."

Sufyan says: To the best of my memory, it is up to here, but after this, Mu'ammar narrated from Zuhri, from the narrator Nihan Tami, that he used to take Lady Umm Salamah's mule. She said to me: O Nihan! How much of the amount of your contract of writing (kitabat) is left? I replied: One thousand dirhams. Nihan says: Lady Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) inquired: Do you have that amount which you can pay? I replied: Yes! So Lady Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Send it to so-and-so. Lady Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) mentioned the name of her brother or one of her children, and then she drew the curtain. Then she said: Peace be upon you, O Nihan! This is the last time you will see me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a woman has a slave, and that slave has the amount which he can pay, then the woman should observe hijab from that slave." So I said: I neither have anything to pay, nor do I have to pay anything.
