Ma'dan bin Talhah narrates about Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him: He said this from the pulpit: I saw in a dream as if a rooster pecked me three times (here the narrator is doubtful about the exact words). I thought: perhaps a non-Arab (will martyr me). I am entrusting the matter (of selecting a new caliph) after me to those six individuals, for when the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, departed from this world, he was pleased with these gentlemen. These gentlemen are Uthman, Ali, Zubair, Talhah, Abdur Rahman bin Awf, and Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas, may Allah be pleased with them. So, the person who is chosen as caliph among them will be considered the caliph.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Ibrahim bin Basheer
Benefit: A few days before the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu, he saw this dream, and he interpreted it to mean that the time of his death was near, and so it happened. What occurred with Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu in the last days of his life, regarding his demise, is as follows:
① In his last days, Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq radi Allahu anhu asked Sayyiduna Hudhayfah radi Allahu anhu about the hadith concerning tribulations (fitan). In it, Sayyiduna Hudhayfah radi Allahu anhu said that there is a closed door between you and the tribulations; when it is broken, then the tribulations will begin. And by that door, what was meant was Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu. (Sahih al-Bukhari: 7096).
② In his last Hajj in 23 AH, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam made a supplication regarding himself: «اللَّهُمَّكَبِرَتْسِنِّي ، وَضَعُفَتْقُوَّتِي ، وَانْتَشَرَتْرَعِيَّتِي ، فَاقْبِضْنِيإِلَيْكَغَيْرَمُضَيِّعٍوَلَامُفَرِّطٍ» He made this supplication at the place of Ahthah upon returning from Mina. (Tarikh Madinah: 3/872, and its chain is authentic up to Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib).
③ In his last days, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam supplicated to Allah Most High for martyrdom in this way: « اللَّهُمَّارْزُقْنِيشَهَادَةً فى سَبيلِكَ،واجْعَلْمَوْتي فى بَلَدِنَبِيِّكَ » (Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd: 3/33113, and its chain is hasan).
④ Sayyiduna Abu Musa radi Allahu anhu saw a dream regarding the demise of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. (Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd: 3/332, and its chain is authentic).
⑤ His last Friday sermon: He delivered his last Friday sermon on the 21st of Dhu al-Hijjah, 23 AH, in which he mentioned his dream that a rooster attacked him three times. (Musnad Humaydi, this is the very hadith being explained here). In it, he said: If death comes to me soon, then select (the caliph) from among these six.
⑥ The details of his martyrdom are present in Sahih al-Bukhari (3700). Also see: [عمر بن خطاب شخصيته وعصره للصلابي : 546 تا 555]
