Hadith 279

Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: She said, “O Messenger of Allah! I saw you with your hand placed on the forehead of a horse, and you were standing and talking with Hazrat Kalbi (may Allah be pleased with him).” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “Did you see him?” Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) replied, “Yes.” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “That was Jibreel (Gabriel), and he is sending you greetings of peace.” So Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said, “Peace be upon him also, and may Allah’s mercy be upon him. May Allah reward him with the best reward given to any visitor or guest; how excellent a companion and how excellent a guest he is.”

Explanation & Benefits

Benefit:
In this hadith, the tremendous virtues of Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha are established, as even Jibreel Amin alayhis salam sends greetings (salam) to her. Sometimes, Jibreel alayhis salam would bring revelation in the form of Sayyiduna Dihyah Kalbi radi Allahu anhu. A man may send greetings (salam) to a non-mahram woman with good intention. The reply to a greeting given in absence should be in this manner: "Wa alayhi as-salam wa rahmatullah." It should be noted that saying "Alayka wa alayhi as-salam" is not established.
