Hadith 274

Ibn Abi Mulaykah says: The mention was made before Umm al-Mu’minin Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that a woman wears sandals (a type of footwear specific to men), so Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed women who imitate men.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Ibrahim bin Basheer
Benefit:
In this hadith, women are prohibited from imitating men, to the extent that a woman cannot even wear men's shoes or clothing. Although the hadith is weak in terms of its chain of narration, it is authentic due to its corroborating evidence. For the corroborating evidence, see (Sunan Abi Dawood: 4098); this corroborating narration is established as authentic. And all praise is due to Allah. Within the home, a woman wearing men's shoes and a man wearing women's shoes is also prohibited due to the generality of this hadith. However, if one puts them on, for example, when going to fetch something, provided that one's own shoes are not available, then there is allowance for this. Firstly, it is out of necessity, and secondly, it is within one's own home; the man is not going outside wearing women's shoes such that someone would begin to perceive him as a woman. In the present era, women, in order to resemble men, and men, in order to resemble women, are seen committing many major sins. May Allah Ta'ala reform the Muslim Ummah. Ameen.
