Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) saying on the pulpit: Indeed, Allah Almighty sent Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with the truth and revealed the Book to him, and among what was revealed to him was the verse regarding "rajm" (stoning). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) carried out stoning, and after him, we also carried out stoning. Sufyan says: I heard this narration as a lengthy narration from Zuhri, at that time I memorized some parts of it, but this part was included in it, which I did not memorize that day.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Ibrahim bin Basheer
Benefit: This hadith is concise, whereas the detailed version is found in Sunan Abi Dawud (2553) as follows: Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu said: I fear that after some time has passed, someone will say: “I do not find the mention of stoning (rajm) in the Book of Allah,” and thus people will go astray by abandoning an obligation of Allah. Listen! Rajm is the truth, when a man is married and the testimony is established, or the act (of adultery) is proven, or there is a confession. I have recited this verse (in the Noble Qur’an): «والشَّيْخُوَالشَّيخةُ إذا زَنَيَافارْجُموهماالْبتَّةَ» “When an elderly man and an elderly woman commit adultery, then surely stone them both.” (Later, this verse was abrogated, but its ruling remains.) The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam prescribed the punishment of rajm (stoning) for those who committed adultery while married, and after the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, we also carried out the punishment of rajm.
If both the man and woman who commit adultery are married, then both will be stoned. If the man is married and the woman is unmarried, then the man will be stoned and the woman will be given one hundred lashes and exiled for one year. Similarly, if the woman is married and the man is unmarried, then the woman will be stoned and the man will be given one hundred lashes and exiled for one year. The ruling of rajm is also found in the Bible; see (Book of Leviticus, Chapter: 20, Verse: 100). There is consensus among all hadith scholars regarding rajm. The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and all the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum were also proponents of it, and they showed mercy. In this golden principle lies the protection of honor. Unfortunately, some people have denied rajm. Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu had indicated towards this matter. For a detailed refutation of these misguided views, see (Inkar-e-Hadith ka Naya Roop: 275/1, 103; Al-Ahkam by Ibn Hazm, p. 408, 453).
