Hadith 224

Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever passes away and a group of people numbering up to one hundred perform the funeral prayer over him, and they intercede for the deceased, then their intercession is accepted."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Ibrahim bin Basheer
Benefit:
It is established from this hadith that people performing the funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) for a deceased person constitutes intercession on his behalf, and Allah accepts the intercession made by believers—those who are people of tawhid—for other believers. In this hadith, the number of those performing the funeral prayer is mentioned as one hundred, but in some narrations, forty is also mentioned; see Sahih Muslim (948). However, the condition in this hadith is that those performing the funeral prayer must not be polytheists (mushrik), but rather people of tawhid. Even if millions of polytheists were to perform the funeral prayer and intercede, their prayer would be entirely in vain.
