Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: We set out with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: “Whoever among you wishes to recite the talbiyah for Hajj and ‘Umrah together, let him recite its talbiyah; whoever wishes to recite the talbiyah for Hajj only, let him recite its talbiyah; and whoever wishes to recite the talbiyah for ‘Umrah only, let him recite its talbiyah.” Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the talbiyah for Hajj, and the people with him also recited the same talbiyah, so some people recited the talbiyah for both Hajj and ‘Umrah, and some recited the talbiyah for ‘Umrah only. I was among those who recited the talbiyah for ‘Umrah only (or intended it). Sufyan says: Then I became unsure regarding this hadith, and only this part of it I remember.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Ibrahim bin Basheer
Benefit: In this hadith, some types of Hajj are mentioned. There are a total of three types of Hajj, and their necessary details are as follows:
SG Hajj Ifrad EG: That is, during the days of Hajj, one assumes the ihram solely for the performance of Hajj and does not perform ‘umrah. In this type, sacrifice (qurbani) is not obligatory.
SG Hajj Tamattu’ EG: In a single journey, one first assumes ihram for ‘umrah, performs the tawaf and sa’i, and after shaving (halq) or shortening (qasr) the hair, comes out of ihram. Then, when the time for Hajj arrives, one assumes ihram for Hajj. Because one takes advantage of combining two acts of worship in a single journey, this is called Hajj Tamattu’, and the one who performs it is called a mutamatti’. For him, a sacrifice of gratitude is obligatory. Pakistani pilgrims generally perform Hajj Tamattu’.
SG Hajj Qiran EG: One assumes ihram for both Hajj and ‘umrah together, first performs the rites of ‘umrah, and after the sa’i of ‘umrah, does not shave or shorten the hair, but remains in the state of ihram until, after performing the tawaf al-qudum and the sa’i of Hajj, he remains in ihram until the days of Hajj, and after performing the rites of Hajj, shaves or shortens the hair and comes out of ihram. For the one performing Hajj Qiran, sacrifice is also obligatory.
