Narration on Meeting at the Pond of Kawthar and Worldly Fears
Hadith 158

158 - حَدَّثَنَا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ قَالَ: ثنا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ مِسْعَرٍ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ، عَنْ طَارِقِ بْنِ شِهَابٍ قَالَ: عَادَتْ خَبَّابًا بَقَايَا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالُوا: أَبْشِرْ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ؛ تَرِدُ عَلَي إِخْوَانِكَ الْحَوْضَ، فَقَالَ: «وَعَلَيْهَا رِجَالٌ إِنَّكُمْ ذَكَرْتُمْ لِي أَقْوَامًا، وَسَمَّيْتُمْ لِي إِخْوَانًا مَضَوْا لَمْ يَنَالُوا مِنْ أُجُورِهِمْ شَيْئًا، وَإِنَّا بَقِينَا بَعْدَهُمْ حَتَّي نِلْنَا مِنَ الدُّنْيَا مَا نَخَافُ أَنْ يَكُونَ ثَوَابُنَا لِتِلْكَ الْأَعْمَالِ»
Tariq bin Shihab narrates: Some companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) came to visit Sayyiduna Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him). They said: O Abu Abdullah, glad tidings to you that you will meet your brothers at the Pond of Kawthar. He replied: There will be many people on it. You have mentioned some people before me and called them my brothers, whereas those people have departed (from this world) and did not receive anything from their reward. After them, we remained and we also acquired the world, as a result of which we fear that perhaps this (worldly gain) is the recompense for our deeds.

See how concerned Sayyiduna Khabbab radi Allahu anhu is regarding the blessings of Allah Ta'ala, fearing lest the reward for the righteous deeds we have performed has already been given to us in this world. Whereas Allah Ta'ala bestows His blessings upon the believers in both this world and the Hereafter. Nowadays, people are preoccupied with worldly concerns, and the worry for the Hereafter seems to have vanished—except for those upon whom my Lord has mercy.
