The narrator named Qais reports: We went to visit Sayyiduna Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) in his illness; he had seven marks of cauterization on his stomach. He said: If the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had not forbidden us from praying for death, I would have prayed for it. Then he said: Some people before us have already departed (from this world), and they did not attain anything from the world. After them, we remained until the world also came to us, and so much came to us that none of us knows what to do with it except to put it into the earth (i.e., to use it for construction). However, whatever a Muslim spends, he will get reward for everything except for what he spends on the earth (i.e., on construction).

Benefit: From this hadith, firstly, it is established that wishing for death is prohibited. The only permission is that if a person is afflicted with the trials of life, he may supplicate in this manner: «اللـهـم أحـيـنـى كانت الحيوة خيرا لي ، وتوفني إذا كانت الوفاة خيرا لي» "O Allah! Keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and when death is better for me, then cause me to die." From this hadith, it is also understood that spending excessive money on building a house is wasteful; rather, one should have a suitable home. Spending on children or anyone else is a source of reward, and a person should always continue to spend on them.

Narrated Qais bin Abi Hazim: We went to pay a visit to Khabbab (who was sick) and he had been branded (cauterized) at seven places in his body. He said, "Our companions who died (during the lifetime of the Prophet) left (this world) without having their rewards reduced through enjoying the pleasures of this life, but we have got (so much) wealth that we find no way to spend It except on the construction of buildings Had the Prophet not forbidden us to wish for death, I would have wished for it.' We visited him for the second time while he was building a wall. He said, A Muslim is rewarded (in the Hereafter) for whatever he spends except for something that he spends on building."

Hadith Commentary: Constructing buildings without benefit and spending money on them is the worst form of extravagance, yet today most people are involved in exactly this. It is best to try to remain protected from this as much as possible.

Hadith Commentary: (1) Khabab bin Al-Aratt radi Allahu anhu said: After the passing of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, we acquired so much wealth of the world that there was no place to keep it, and apart from building houses, we saw no other use for it. From this, it is understood that spending wealth on constructing buildings is blameworthy, but a building that is limited to personal necessity is not blameworthy, because without it, subsistence is not possible.
(2) In this hadith, the prohibition of supplicating to Allah Ta’ala for one’s own death is established. In any case, praying for death is one thing, and merely desiring it is another. In any case, a person should not supplicate to Allah Ta’ala for his own death; however, a person afflicted with calamity and pain or hardship may wish for death, but it is necessary to adopt the manner mentioned in the hadith. And Allah knows best.
