Hadith 153

153 - حَدَّثَنَا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ قَالَ: ثنا وَكِيعُ قَالَ: ثنا الْأَعْمَشُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ حَارِثَةَ بْنِ مُضَرِّبٍ، عَنْ خَبَّابٍ قَالَ «شَكَوْنَا إِلَي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الرَّمْضَاءَ فَلَمْ يُشْكِنَا»
Sayyiduna Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We complained to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about the intensity of the heat, but he (peace be upon him) did not give us any answer.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefit:
It is established from other ahadith that in the heat, the Zuhr prayer should be performed after letting it cool down a bit. Some have said that this hadith is abrogated. (al-Dibaj: 6/53) and the hadith regarding delaying (ibrad) is the abrogating one.

498. Commentary: Although you used to delay the Zuhr prayer somewhat during the intense heat of summer, as will be mentioned ahead, even by that time the ground would still remain hot. Therefore, the hot ground would cause discomfort during coming and going as well as during the performance of the prayer. It is evident that the prayer cannot be delayed so much that the time for Asr arrives.

Commentary:

(al-ramda’)
This refers to that sand which, having been heated by the sun’s rays, has become hot.

(2)
The request of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) was that, since the sand becomes hot due to the sun, it becomes difficult to perform prostration (sujud) during the noon (zuhr) prayer in the summer season. If the prayer were to be delayed a little, so that the heat of the sand would lessen, it would be appropriate. However, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not accept this request; rather, even in the summer season, he would lead the prayer early.

In other ahadith, there is mention of performing the noon (zuhr) prayer with some delay during the summer season (as will be mentioned ahead in Chapter 4). This means that a slight delay is permissible, but there is no allowance for further delay. It should not be that, by delaying, the prayer is performed at its last time.
