Prohibition of using the price of alcohol and swine in war booty
Hadith 14
14 - حَدَّثَنَا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ ثنا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، ثنا مِسْعَرٌ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عُمَيْرٍ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي فُلَانٌ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ عَلَي الْمِنْبَرِ يَقُولُ بِيَدِهِ عَلَي الْمِنْبَرِ هَكَذَا - يَعْنِي يُحَرِّكُهَا يَمِينًا وَشِمَالًا - عُوَيْمِلٌ لَنَا بِالْعِرَاقِ، عُوَيْمِلٌ لَنَا بِالْعِرَاقِ خَلَطَ فِي فَيْءِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ أَثْمَانَ الْخَمْرِ وَالْخَنَازِيرِ وَقَدْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «لَعَنَ اللَّهُ الْيَهُودَ حُرِّمَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الشُّحُومُ فَجَمَلُوهَا فَبَاعُوهَا» يَعْنِي أَذَابُوهَا
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) on the pulpit, gesturing with his hand in this way—moving his hand to the left and to the right—saying: In Iraq, one of our minor officials has mixed the price of alcohol and swine into the Muslims’ “mal-e-fay” (spoils of war), even though the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “May Allah curse the Jews; fat was made unlawful for them, so they melted it and sold it.” The narrator says: That is, they melted it.
