Hadith 1296
1296 - حَدَّثَنَا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ قَالَ: ثنا سُفْيَانُ، قَالَ: ثنا عَمْرٌو، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، يَقُولُ: لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ ﴿ قُلْ هُوَ الْقَادِرُ عَلَي أَنْ يَبْعَثَ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابًا مِنْ فَوقِكُمْ﴾ ، قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «أَعُوذُ بِوَجْهِكَ» ، ﴿ أَوْ مِنْ تَحْتِ أَرْجُلِكُمْ﴾ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «أَعُوذُ بِوَجْهِكَ» ، ﴿ أَوْ يَلْبِسَكُمْ شِيَعًا وَيُذِيقَ بَعْضَكُمْ بَأْسَ بَعْضٍ﴾ ، قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «هَاتَانِ أَهْوَنُ، أَوْ هَاتَانِ أَيْسَرُ»
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When this verse was revealed: «قُلْ هُوَ الْقَادِرُ عَلَى أَنْ يَبْعَثَ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابًا مِنْ فَوْقِكُمْ» (6-al-An'am:65) "Say: He is able to send punishment upon you from above you," the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I seek refuge in Your Being." (The command of Allah Almighty is) «أَوْ مِنْ تَحْتِ أَرْجُلِكُمْ» (6-al-An'am:65) "or from beneath your feet," so the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed: "I seek refuge in Your Being." «أَوْ يَلْبِسَكُمْ شِيَعًا وَيُذِيقَ بَعْضَكُمْ بَأْسَ بَعْضٍ» (6-al-An'am:65) (The command of Allah Almighty is) "or He may divide you into sects and make you taste the violence of one another." So the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These two are easier." (At this point, the narrator is in doubt about the wording of the narration.)
