Hadith 1137

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Aqra’ bin Habis saw the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kissing Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), so he said: I have ten children but I have never kissed any one of them. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “He who does not show mercy will not be shown mercy.”

Explanation & Benefits

Benefit:
In this hadith, there is an admonition for the hard-hearted person who does not show love to his children. The Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to show great affection to his grandsons, and would even kiss them—Subhan Allah.
From this, it is also understood that there is no harm in kissing one's own children, grandsons, granddaughters, nephews, and nieces when they are young; rather, this is a sign of love for them.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Kissing one’s children is an expression of natural love and affection. It is permissible for a father to kiss his daughter, as has been mentioned in other hadiths. However, it has been observed that some people avoid this, which is undoubtedly unnatural.

➋ Having mercy upon Allah’s creation is a means of attaining the mercy of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.
