It is narrated about Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that once he passed by Sayyiduna Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was reciting poetry in the mosque. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) scolded him for this, so he replied: I have recited poetry in this mosque at a time when the one who was present here was better than you. Then he turned towards Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: I ask you by Allah, did you hear the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "Respond to the disbelievers on my behalf with poetry. O Allah! Support him with the Holy Spirit." So Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, yes.

Benefit: From this hadith it is established that reciting good poetry, which is in accordance with the Qur’an and Hadith, in the mosque and similar places is permissible. It is also established that defending the Qur’an and Hadith is obligatory, and whoever works in the defense of the Qur’an and Hadith is included in the supplication of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam «الـلـهـم أيده بروح القدس ». O Allah! Make the writer also among those included in this supplication, Ameen.

Saeed said: Umar passed by Hassan when he was reciting verses in the mosque. He looked at him. Thereupon he said: I used to recite verses when there was present in it the one who was better than you (i. e. the Prophet).

Benefits and Issues: ➊ Reciting poetry in the mosque that pertains to religious and moral subjects is permissible.
➋ However, it is also a relevant fact that the Shari’ah temperament does not have much affinity with poetry. For this reason, Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu viewed the recitation of poetry by Hazrat Hassan radi Allahu anhu with disapproval.
➌ In comparison to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, even the greatest of the righteous, the pious, and the reformers hold no standing.
➍ If a situation of disagreement in thought or action arises with a person of virtue, the response should be given with utmost respect, good manners, and with evidence.
➎ If a person of lesser status is stronger in Shari’ah evidence and proof, then no person of virtue should feel any shame in accepting it.
