Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man used to present a waterskin of wine every year as a gift to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Once, he presented that gift in the same way, but by then wine had been declared unlawful. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It has been declared unlawful." The man asked: "Should I not sell it?" The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The One who has forbidden its drinking has also forbidden its sale." The man then asked: "Should I give it to the Jews without compensation, just as it is?" The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The One who has forbidden it has also forbidden that you give it to the Jews without compensation (rather, you should destroy it)." The man asked: "Then what should I do with it?" The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You should pour it out in an open field."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Ibrahim bin Basheer
Benefit: Accepting wine as a gift was not prohibited before the prohibition of wine, which is why the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would accept it, just as he would accept wealth from zakat and charity and spend it on those entitled to it, but would not consume it himself. Similarly, both before and after prophethood, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam never drank wine.
From this hadith, it is established that wine is forbidden, and its sale is also forbidden, and it is also understood that giving wine to disbelievers is forbidden as well. It should be noted that although wine is forbidden, there is no evidence from the Qur’an or hadith that it is impure (najis); therefore, the opinion of some who declare wine to be impure is not correct.
