Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) heard the sound of a woman weeping, so he forbade her. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Abu Hafs! Leave her, for the time of calamity is near, the eye is weeping and the soul is in pain."

Benefit: It is established from this hadith that merely weeping over the deceased is not a sin, and it is also proven that women have tender hearts. If they are only weeping and not wailing, then they should not be prevented. However, if they engage in screaming, wailing, or commit prohibited acts, then they should be stopped.

´It was narrated from Muhammad bin 'Amr bin 'Ata that Salamah bin Al-Azraq said:` "I heard Abu Hurairah say: 'Someone from the family of the Messenger of Allah died, and the women gathered, weeping for him. 'Umar stood up and told them not to do that, and threw them out, but the Messenger of Allah said: Let them be there, O 'Umar, for the eye weeps and the heart grieves, but soon we will join them."

1860. Commentary: Benefit: The chain of transmission (isnad) of the aforementioned narration is weak, but the issue mentioned in the hadith is correct based on other authentic evidences: that the crying which naturally occurs due to shock is permissible; it does not fall under the category of the prohibited type of crying. Allamah Atiyyubi, while explaining the aforementioned hadith, has mentioned its supporting evidences and has conducted a very fine discussion.
