The above narration is also transmitted with another chain. ( Imam Humaydi, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The narration that Abdul Karim has narrated to us is more beloved to us, although compared to the narrator named Abu Sa’d, he is a greater memorizer.
Abdullah bin Ma’qil narrates: I was present with my father in the company of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), so my father said to him: Have you heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “Regret is repentance”? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: Yes, I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “Regret is repentance.”

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Ibrahim bin Basheer
Benefit: Regret after committing a sin is an important component of repentance (tawbah). If a person feels remorse after sinning, then repentance is possible. If, however, the situation is the opposite—meaning a person commits a sin and feels happy about it, and continues to commit sin upon sin—then such a person's conscience becomes dead, and his sense (of right and wrong) is lost. The second component of repentance is that one repents with sincerity of heart, and the third component is to resolve not to commit the sin again in the future.
