Hadith 1026

1026 - حَدَّثَنَا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ قَالَ: ثنا سُفْيَانُ، قَالَ: ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي مَنْ سَمِعَ، أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ، يَقُولُ: قَالَ أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ صَلَّي اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَنْ كَانَتْ بِهِ جَنَابَةٌ فَلَا يَنَمْ حَتَّي يَتَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلَاةِ»
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever becomes in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah) should not sleep until he performs ablution (wudu) like the ablution for prayer."

Benefit:
It is established from this hadith that a person in a state of major ritual impurity (junub) should perform ablution (wudu) before sleeping, and then sleep. This ablution is recommended (mustahabb); performing ablution is obligatory (fard) only for prayer (salah), while for all other matters, performing ablution is recommended (mustahabb).
