Hadith 1001

Asim bin Ubaidullah Umari narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) met a woman who was scented with perfume, so he asked: O slave-woman of Allah! Where are you going? She replied: To the mosque. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Have you applied perfume for the mosque? She replied: Yes. So Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Go back and wash it off! For I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Any woman who applies perfume and then goes out intending to go to the mosque, her prayer is not accepted. And this does not happen, and that does not happen, until she returns and bathes as she would bathe after sexual impurity (i.e., she washes off all traces of the perfume completely)."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Muhammad Ibrahim bin Basheer
Benefit:
This hadith proves that a woman should go out of the house with simplicity. A woman may use perfume while staying at home, but when she intends to go to the mosque for prayer or to the market, she must never use perfume. If she goes to the mosque wearing perfume, her prayer will not be accepted. Similarly, when a woman goes to the market or elsewhere wearing perfume, she has been described as a fornicatress (zaniyah).

It is unfortunate that in the present era, on occasions such as weddings, women not only use perfume but are also in a semi-naked state. What has happened to the Muslim Ummah? Why do they not love Islam? The true honor and success of men and women lies in obedience to the Qur’an and Hadith, not in imitating the Jews and Christians.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Where there is no fear of temptation (fitnah), it is correct to directly address a non-mahram woman in order to fulfill the obligation of enjoining good (amr bil-ma'ruf) and forbidding evil (nahy 'an al-munkar). Especially for elderly men, this action is not considered blameworthy.

➋ It is not permissible for women to go out wearing perfume, even if they are going to the mosque.

Benefits and Issues:

It is prohibited for a woman to use perfume when leaving the house.

It is permissible for a woman to go to the mosque for congregational prayer, provided that she does not go out adorned or beautified, but rather in simple clothing, observing proper covering (hijab) and other Islamic etiquettes.

It is permissible for a respected person to admonish a non-mahram woman if she makes a mistake, provided there is no risk of misunderstanding that could endanger the honor of a righteous man.

Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) addressed this woman as “servant of al-Jabbar” instead of “servant of Allah” in order to instill the fear of Allah in her. There was also an aspect of rebuke in this.
