Asma bin Hakam bin Fuzari narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: Whenever I heard a hadith from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), Allah Almighty, according to His will, would grant me the benefit He wished to grant me. And when someone else narrated a hadith to me, I would make him swear an oath; when he would swear an oath before me, I would accept his statement as true. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated a hadith to me, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) spoke the truth to me. He said: I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: “Whoever commits a sin, then gets up and performs ablution and performs ablution well, then offers two units of prayer, then seeks forgiveness from Allah Almighty, Allah Almighty forgives him.” Sufyan, the narrator, says: This narration is also transmitted with another chain, but in it are these words: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “That person strives to do good.” (The narrator says:) That is, he performs prayer.
