حَدِيثُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ الْمُزَنِيِّ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
Hadith of Abdullah ibn Mughaffal al-Muzani from the Prophet (peace be upon him)
Hadith 16787
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ إِيَاسٍ الْجُرَيْرِيُّ ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ عَبَايَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ يَزِيدَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : سَمِعَنِي أَبِي ، وَأَنَا أَقُولُ : بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ سورة الفاتحة آية 1 ، فَقَالَ : أَيْ بُنَيَّ ، إِيَّاكَ قَالَ : " وَلَمْ أَرَ أَحَدًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ أَبْغَضَ إِلَيْهِ حَدَثًا فِي الْإِسْلَامِ مِنْهُ فَإِنِّي قَدْ صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمَعَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، وَعُمَرَ ، وَمَعَ عُثْمَانَ ، فَلَمْ أَسْمَعْ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ يَقُولُهَا ، فَلَا تَقُلْهَا ، إِذَا أَنْتَ قَرَأْتَ ، فَقُلْ : الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ " .
Yazid bin Abdullah says that once my father heard me reciting Bismillah aloud in prayer, so he said, "Son, avoid this." Yazid says, "I have not seen any companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him) hate innovation as much as he did, because I have prayed with the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the three caliphs, and I did not hear any of them recite Bismillah aloud, so you should not do so either. Rather, begin the recitation with 'Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Alamin.'"
Hadith 16788
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَوْلَا أَنَّ الْكِلَابَ أُمَّةٌ مِنَ الْأُمَمِ لَأَمَرْتُ بِقَتْلِهَا ، فَاقْتُلُوا مِنْهَا الْأَسْوَدَ الْبَهِيمَ ، وَأَيُّمَا قَوْمٍ اتَّخَذُوا كَلْبًا لَيْسَ بِكَلْبِ حَرْثٍ ، أَوْ صَيْدٍ ، أَوْ مَاشِيَةٍ نَقَصُوا مِنْ أُجُورِهِمْ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطًا " . (حديث موقوف) (حديث مرفوع) قَالَ : " وَكُنَّا نُؤْمَرُ أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ فِي مَرَابِضِ الْغَنَمِ ، وَلَا نُصَلِّيَ فِي أَعْطَانِ الْإِبِلِ ، فَإِنَّهَا خُلِقَتْ مِنَ الشَّيَاطِينِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If dogs were not a community (ummah) among the communities, I would have ordered their extermination. Therefore, kill every jet-black dog. And whoever keeps a dog that is not for guarding fields, hunting, or livestock, their reward will be reduced by one qirat every day. And we were commanded that we may pray in sheep enclosures, but not in camel enclosures, because their creation is from Satan (there is a satanic nature in them).
Hadith 16789
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ إِدْرِيسَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ شُعْبَةَ يَذْكُرُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِيَاسٍ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ قُرَّةَ الْمُزَنِيِّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ قَالَ : سَمِعْتُهُ " يَقْرَأُ يَعْنِي النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ الْفَتْحِ ، فَلَوْلَا أَنْ يَجْتَمِعَ النَّاسُ عَلَيَّ لَحَكَيْتُ لَكُمْ قِرَاءَةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : قَرَأَ سُورَةَ الْفَتْحِ " ، قَالَ : لَوْلَا أَنْ يَجْتَمِعَ النَّاسُ عَلَيَّ لَحَكَيْتُ لَكُمْ مَا قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مُغَفَّلٍ كَيْفَ قَرَأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ ، وقَالَ بَهْزٌ ، وَغُنْدَرٌ : قَالَ فَرَجَّعَ فِيهَا .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) reciting the Noble Qur’an on the occasion of the conquest of Makkah. If people did not gather around me, I would recite to you in the manner of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recited Surah Al-Fath. Muawiyah bin Qurrah says that if I too did not fear people gathering, I would demonstrate before you the style narrated by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal, showing how the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recited.
Hadith 16790
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا كَهْمَسٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بُرَيْدَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " بَيْنَ كُلِّ أَذَانَيْنِ صَلَاةٌ لِمَنْ شَاءَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal Muzani, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: There is prayer between every two calls to prayer; whoever wishes may offer it.
Hadith 16791
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، وَبَهْزٌ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدُ بْنُ هِلَالٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُغَفَّلٍ ، قَالَ : دُلِّيَ جِرَابٌ مِنْ شَحْمٍ يَوْمَ خَيْبَرَ ، قَالَ فَالْتَزَمْتُهُ ، قُلْتُ : لَا أُعْطِي أَحَدًا مِنْهُ شَيْئًا ، قَالَ فَالْتَفَتُّ ، فَإِذَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يَتَبَسَّمُ " ، قَالَ بَهْزٌ : إِلَيَّ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the occasion of the Battle of Khaybar, I found a leather container in which there was fat. I grabbed it and tucked it under my arm and said, "I will not give anyone anything from this." Suddenly, I noticed that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was looking at me and smiling.
Hadith 16792
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو التَّيَّاحِ ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَرَ بِقَتْلِ الْكِلَابِ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " مَا لَهُمْ وَلَهَا " ، فَرَخَّصَ فِي كَلْبِ الصَّيْدِ ، وَفِي كَلْبِ الْغَنَمِ ، قَالَ : " فإِذَا وَلَغَ الْكَلْبُ فِي الْإِنَاءِ فَاغْسِلُوهُ سَبْعَ مِرَارٍ وَالثَّامِنَةَ عَفِّرُوهُ بِالتُّرَابِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal Muzani, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, initially ordered the killing of dogs, but later said that there is no longer a need for this, and permitted keeping dogs for hunting and for guarding herds of goats. And he said that when a dog puts its mouth in a vessel, wash it seven times and scrub it with earth the eighth time.
Hadith 16793
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ هِشَامٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " نَهَى عَنِ التَّرَجُّلِ إِلَّا غِبًّا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal Muzani, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade combing the hair, except occasionally.
Hadith 16794
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي كَهْمَسٌ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ ، قَالَ : نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الْخَذْفِ ، وَقَالَ : " إِنَّهَا لَا يُنْكَأُ بِهَا عَدُوٌّ ، وَلَا يُصَادُ بِهَا صَيْدٌ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal Muzani, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade throwing pebbles and said: "With it, neither is the enemy subdued nor is any game caught."
Hadith 16795
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ الْأَحْوَلُ ، عَنِ الفُضَيْلِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ الرَّقَاشِيِّ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا عِنْدَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ ، قَالَ : فَتَذَاكَرْنَا الشَّرَابَ ، فَقَالَ : الْخَمْرُ حَرَامٌ ، قُلْتُ لَهُ : الْخَمْرُ حَرَامٌ فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ، قَالَ : فَأَيْشْ تُرِيدُ ، تُرِيدُ مَا سَمِعْتُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يَنْهَى عَنِ الدُّبَّاءِ وَالْحَنْتَمِ وَالْمُزَفَّتِ " ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : مَا الْحَنْتَمُ ؟ ، قَالَ : كُلُّ خَضْرَاءَ وَبَيْضَاءَ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : مَا الْمُزَفَّتُ ؟ ، قَالَ : كُلُّ مُقَيَّرٍ مِنْ زِقٍّ أَوْ غَيْرِهِ .
Fudayl bin Zayd Raqashi says that once we were sitting with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) when the topic of alcohol came up, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal said that alcohol is forbidden. I asked: Has it been declared forbidden in the Book of Allah? He replied: What is your intention? Do you want me to tell you what I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding this? I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbidding the use of gourds, hantam, and muzaffat. I asked the meaning of hantam, and he said: Every green and white jug. I asked the meaning of muzaffat, and he said: A vessel made of pitch, etc.
Hadith 16796
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ الرَّقَاشِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي نَعَامَةَ ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ مُغَفَّلٍ سَمِعَ ابْنًا لَهُ ، يَقُولُ : اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْفِرْدَوْسَ وَكَذَا ، وَأَسْأَلُكَ كَذَا ، فَقَالَ : أَيْ بُنَيَّ سَلْ اللَّهَ الْجَنَّةَ ، وَتَعَوَّذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ النَّارِ ، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " يَكُونُ فِي هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ قَوْمٌ يَعْتَدُونَ فِي الدُّعَاءِ وَالطَّهُورِ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal once heard his son making this supplication: "O Allah! I ask You for Jannat al-Firdaws and such-and-such things." So he said: "Son! Ask Allah only for Paradise and seek refuge from Hell, for I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say that there will be some people in this Ummah who will exceed the limits in supplication and ablution."
Hadith 16797
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، وَعَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " يَقْطَعُ الصَّلَاةَ الْمَرْأَةُ وَالْكَلْبُ وَالْحِمَارُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal Muzani رضي الله عنه that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: If a woman, a dog, or a donkey passes in front of a person praying, the prayer is broken.
Hadith 16798
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو النَّضْرِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْمُبَارَكُ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ تَبِعَ جِنَازَةً حَتَّى يُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهَا ، فَلَهُ قِيرَاطٌ ، وَمَنْ انْتَظَرَهَا حَتَّى يُفْرَغَ مِنْهَا فَلَهُ قِيرَاطَانِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal Muzani, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever accompanies a funeral and offers the funeral prayer will receive the reward of one qirat, and whoever waits until the burial is completed will receive the reward of two qirats.
Hadith 16799
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو النَّضْرِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْمُبَارَكُ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " صَلُّوا فِي مَرَابِضِ الْغَنَمِ ، وَلَا تُصَلُّوا فِي أَعْطَانِ الْإِبِلِ ، فَإِنَّهَا خُلِقَتْ مِنَ الشَّيَاطِينِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal Muzani, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: You may pray among the flocks of sheep, but you may not pray in the enclosures of camels, because their creation is from Satan (there is a satanic nature in them).
Hadith 16800
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي حُسَيْنُ بْنُ وَاقِدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي ثَابِتٌ الْبُنَانِيُّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ الْمُزَنِيِّ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالْحُدَيْبِيَةِ فِي أَصْلِ الشَّجَرَةِ الَّتِي قَالَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى فِي الْقُرْآنِ ، وَكَانَ يَقَعُ مِنْ أَغْصَانِ تِلْكَ الشَّجَرَةِ عَلَى ظَهْرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ، وَسُهَيْلُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِعَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ : " اكْتُبْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ سورة الفاتحة آية 1 " ، فَأَخَذَ سُهَيْلُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو بِيَدِهِ ، فَقَالَ : مَا نَعْرِفُ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ سورة الفاتحة آية 1 ، اكْتُبْ فِي قَضِيَّتِنَا مَا نَعْرِفُ ، قَالَ : " اكْتُبْ بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ " ، فَكَتَبَ " هَذَا مَا صَالَحَ عَلَيْهِ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَهْلَ مَكَّةَ " ، فَأَمْسَكَ سُهَيْلُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو بِيَدِهِ ، وَقَالَ : لَقَدْ ظَلَمْنَاكَ إِنْ كُنْتَ رَسُولَهُ ، اكْتُبْ فِي قَضِيَّتِنَا مَا نَعْرِفُ ، فَقَالَ : " اكْتُبْ هَذَا مَا صَالَحَ عَلَيْهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ابْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ ، وَأَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ " ، فَكَتَبَ ، فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ كَذَلِكَ إِذْ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا ثَلَاثُونَ شَابًّا عَلَيْهِمْ السِّلَاحُ ، فَثَارُوا فِي وُجُوهِنَا ، فَدَعَا عَلَيْهِمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَخَذَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ ، فَقَدِمْنَا إِلَيْهِمْ ، فَأَخَذْنَاهُمْ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " هَلْ جِئْتُمْ فِي عَهْدِ أَحَدٍ ، أَوْ هَلْ جَعَلَ لَكُمْ أَحَدٌ أَمَانًا ؟ " ، فَقَالُوا : لَا ، فَخَلَّى سَبِيلَهُمْ ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَهُوَ الَّذِي كَفَّ أَيْدِيَهُمْ عَنْكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ عَنْهُمْ بِبَطْنِ مَكَّةَ مِنْ بَعْدِ أَنْ أَظْفَرَكُمْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرًا سورة الفتح آية 24 ، قَالَ أَبُو عَبْد الرَّحْمَنِ : قَالَ حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ فِي هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ : عَنْ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، وَقَالَ حُسَيْنُ بْنُ وَاقِدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ ، وَهَذَا الصَّوَابُ عِنْدِي إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal Muzani, may Allah be pleased with him, that we were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) at Hudaybiyyah at the root of that tree which Allah Almighty has mentioned in the Qur'an. The branches of that tree were touching the blessed back of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Sayyiduna Ali and Suhail bin Amr were in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah honor his face: Write "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful." So Suhail bin Amr held his hand and said, "We do not know the Most Gracious and the Most Merciful. Write in this matter only what we know." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Write 'In Your name, O Allah.'" Then Sayyiduna Ali wrote this phrase at the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). This is the decision by which Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), made peace with the people of Makkah. Then Suhail bin Amr again held his hand and said, "If you are the Messenger of Allah, then we have wronged you. Write in this matter only what we know." So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Even if I am the Messenger of Allah, still, you write: This is the decision by which Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abdul Muttalib made peace with the people of Makkah." Meanwhile, thirty armed youths came from somewhere and attacked us. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed against them, so Allah took away their sight, and we advanced and let them go. And on this occasion, this verse was revealed: "Allah is the One Who withheld their hands from you and your hands from them in the valley of Makkah after He had given you victory over them. And Allah is All-Seeing of what you do."
Hadith 16801
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي نَعَامَةَ ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ مُغَفَّلٍ سَمِعَ ابْنًا لَهُ ، يَقُولُ : اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْقَصْرَ الْأَبْيَضَ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ إِذَا دَخَلْتُهَا عَنْ يَمِينِي ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ لَهُ : يَا بُنَيَّ سَلْ اللَّهَ الْجَنَّةَ ، وَتَعَوَّذْهُ مِنَ النَّارِ ، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " سَيَكُونُ بَعْدِي قَوْمٌ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ يَعْتَدُونَ فِي الدُّعَاءِ وَالطَّهُورِ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal once heard his son making this supplication: "O Allah! I ask You for Jannat al-Firdaws and such-and-such things." So he said: "Son! Ask Allah only for Paradise and seek refuge from Hell, for I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say that there will be some people in this Ummah who will exceed the limits in supplication and ablution."
Hadith 16802
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ ، وَحُمَيْدٌ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ رَفِيقٌ يُحِبُّ الرِّفْقَ ، وَيُعْطِي عَلَى الرِّفْقِ مَا لَا يُعْطِي عَلَى الْعُنْفِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal Muzani, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Allah Almighty is Merciful, He loves mercy, and He gives for gentleness what He does not give for harshness.
Hadith 16803
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَعْدٍ ، عَنْ عَبِيدَةَ بْنِ أَبِي رَائِطَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ الْمُزَنِيِّ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَصْحَابِي لَا تَتَّخِذُوهُمْ غَرَضًا بَعْدِي ، فَمَنْ أَحَبَّهُمْ فَبِحُبِّي أَحَبَّهُمْ ، وَمَنْ أَبْغَضَهُمْ فَبِبُغْضِي أَبْغَضَهُمْ ، وَمَنْ آذَاهُمْ فَقَدْ آذَانِي ، وَمَنْ آذَانِي فَقَدْ آذَى اللَّهَ ، وَمَنْ آذَى اللَّهَ أَوْشَكَ أَنْ يَأْخُذَهُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal Muzani, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Do not make my companions a target of criticism after me. Whoever loves them, loves them because of my love, and whoever hates them, in fact hates them because of his hatred for me. Whoever hurts them, hurts me, and whoever hurts me, hurts Allah, and whoever hurts Allah, Allah will soon seize him.
Hadith 16804
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ الرَّازِيُّ ، عَنِ الرَّبِيعِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ ، أَوْ عَنْ غَيْرِهِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ الْمُزَنِيِّ ، قَالَ : أنا شَهِدْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَ نَهَى عَنْ نَبِيذِ الْجَرِّ ، وَأَنَا شَهِدْتُهُ حِينَ رَخَّصَ فِيهِ ، قَالَ : " وَاجْتَنِبُوا الْمُسْكِرَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal Muzani, may Allah be pleased with him, that when the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade the use of nabidh (fermented drink) in pitchers, I was present there, and when he permitted it, I was also present there. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Avoid intoxicating substances.
Hadith 16805
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ يُونُسَ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ رَفِيقٌ يُحِبُّ الرِّفْقَ وَيَرْضَاهُ ، وَيُعْطِي عَلَى الرِّفْقِ مَا لَا يُعْطِي عَلَى الْعُنْفِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal Muzani, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Allah Almighty is Merciful, He loves mercy, and He gives for gentleness what He does not give for harshness.
Hadith 16806
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ يُونُسَ ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا لَقِيَ امْرَأَةً كَانَتْ بَغِيًّا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ ، فَجَعَلَ يُلَاعِبُهَا حَتَّى بَسَطَ يَدَهُ إِلَيْهَا ، فَقَالَتْ الْمَرْأَةُ : مَهْ ، فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قَدْ ذَهَبَ بِالشِّرْكِ وَقَالَ عَفَّانُ مَرَّةً : ذَهَبَ بِالْجَاهِلِيَّةِ وَجَاءَنَا بِالْإِسْلَامِ ، فَوَلَّى الرَّجُلُ ، فَأَصَابَ وَجْهَهُ الْحَائِطُ ، فَشَجَّهُ ، ثُمَّ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَخْبَرَهُ ، فَقَالَ : " أَنْتَ عَبْدٌ أَرَادَ اللَّهُ بِكَ خَيْرًا ، إِذَا أَرَادَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بِعَبْدٍ خَيْرًا عَجَّلَ لَهُ عُقُوبَةَ ذَنْبِهِ ، وَإِذَا أَرَادَ بِعَبْدٍ شَرًّا أَمْسَكَ عَلَيْهِ بِذَنْبِهِ حَتَّى يُوَفَّى بِهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ كَأَنَّهُ عَيْرٌ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the time of ignorance, there was a woman who was a professional prostitute. One day, a man met her and began to flirt with her. In the meantime, when he extended his hand towards her, she said, "Stay back! Allah Almighty has removed shirk and brought us the blessing of Islam." The man went back, and on the way, he collided with a wall and his face was injured. He presented himself before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and narrated the whole incident. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah has intended good for you, because when Allah Almighty intends good for a servant, He hastens the punishment for his sin, and when He intends evil for a servant, He withholds his sin and will take full account of it on the Day of Resurrection, and he will feel like a donkey."
Hadith 16807
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ثَابِتُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ أَبُو زَيْدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ الْأَحْوَلُ ، عَنْ فُضَيْلِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ الرَّقَاشِيِّ ، وَقَدْ غَزَا سَبْعَ غَزَوَاتٍ فِي إِمارَةِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ ، أَنَّهُ أَتَى عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ مُغَفَّلٍ ، فَقَالَ : أَخْبِرْنِي بِمَا حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْنَا مِنْ هَذَا الشَّرَابِ ، فَقَالَ : الْخَمْرَ ، قَالَ : هَذَا فِي الْقُرْآنِ ، قال : أَفَلَا أُحَدِّثُكَ ما سَمِعْتُ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ بَدَأَ بِالِاسْمِ ، أَوْ بِالرِّسَالَةِ ، قَالَ : شَرْعِي ، أَنِّي اكْتَفَيْتُ ؟ ! ، قَالَ : " نَهَى عَنِ الدُّبَّاءِ ، وَالْحَنْتَمِ ، وَالنَّقِيرِ وَالْمُقَيَّرِ " ، قَالَ : مَا الْحَنْتَمُ ؟ ، قَالَ : الْأَخْضَرُ ، وَالْأَبْيَضُ ، قَالَ : مَا الْمُقَيَّرُ ؟ ، قَالَ : مَا لُطِخَ بِالْقَارِ مِنْ زِقٍّ ، أَوْ غَيْرِهِ ، قَالَ : فَانْطَلَقْتُ إِلَى السُّوقِ ، فَاشْتَرَيْتُ أَفِيقَةً ، فَمَا زَالَتْ مُعَلَّقَةً فِي بَيْتِي .
Fudail bin Zaid Raqashi says that once we were sitting with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) when the topic of alcohol came up, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal said that alcohol is forbidden. I asked: Has it been declared forbidden in the Book of Allah? He replied: What is your intention? Do you want me to tell you what I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding this? I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbidding the use of pumpkin, hantam, and muzaffat. I asked the meaning of hantam, and he said: every green and white jug. I asked the meaning of muzaffat, and he said: every vessel made of pitch, etc. So I went to the market and bought a large leather bucket, and that is what I kept hanging in my house.
Hadith 16808
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ عِنْدَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُغَفَّلٍ ، فَحَذف رَجُلٌ عِنْدَهُ مِنْ قَوْمِهِ ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ ، قَالَ : أَبُو عَبْد الرَّحْمَنِ : أَخْطَأَ فِيهِ مَعْمَرٌ لِأَنَّ سَعِيدَ بْنَ جُبَيْرٍ لَمْ يَلْقَ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ مُغَفَّلٍ .
The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.
