Faid says that once I went out with Ibrahim bin Abdur Rahman, he sent a message to Ibn Sa’d and called him. While we were at the place of ‘Arj, Ibn Sa’d reached us. Remember, he is the son of Sayyiduna Sa’d who showed the Prophet (peace be upon him) the way on the night of migration. Ibrahim said to him, “Tell me the hadith that your father narrated to you?” He said, “My father narrated this hadith to me: The Prophet (peace be upon him) came to our place, and with him was Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As-Siddiq, whose daughter used to be nursed at our place. The Prophet (peace be upon him) wanted to find a shortcut to reach Madinah Munawwarah. Sa’d said, ‘There is a mountain path, but two bandits from the tribe of Aslam live there, who are called ‘Mahanan’. If you wish, we can take that route.’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘Take us by their place.’ So we set out. When we reached there, one of them said to the other, ‘This is a Yamani man.’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) invited them to Islam and offered them to accept Islam. They accepted Islam. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked them their names. They said, ‘We are Mahanan’ (which literally means ‘despicable people’). The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘No, you both are Makraman’ (which means ‘honorable people’). Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed them also to reach Madinah Munawwarah. We kept walking until we reached near Quba, where we met Banu Amr bin Awf. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked them, ‘Where is Abu Umamah As’ad bin Zurarah?’ Sa’d bin Khaythamah replied, ‘O Messenger of Allah! He has gone before me. Should I not inform him?’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) then continued on his way until, when the date palms became visible, it was found that the road was crowded with people. The Prophet (peace be upon him) looked at Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As-Siddiq and said, ‘Abu Bakr! This is our destination. I saw in a dream that I was descending at some ponds like the ponds of Banu Mudlij.’
