Hadith of Abu Jubayrah ibn al-Dhahhak al-Ansari
Hadith 16642
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بنُ غِيَاثٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ أَبِي هِنْدٍ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي جَبِيرَةَ بْنِ الضَّحَّاكِ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ ، عَنْ عُمُومَةٍ لَهُ " قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنَّا إِلَّا لَهُ لَقَبٌ أَوْ لَقَبَانِ ، قَالَ : فَكَانَ إِذَا دَعَا بِلَقَبِهِ ، قُلْنَا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّ هَذَا يَكْرَهُ هَذَا ، قَالَ : فَنَزَلَتْ سورة الفاتحة " .
Abu Jubairah narrates from his uncles that when the Prophet (peace be upon him) arrived in Madinah, there was no one among us who did not have one or two nicknames. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) would call someone by his nickname, we would say, "O Messenger of Allah! He dislikes this name." Upon this, the verse was revealed: "Do not taunt one another with different nicknames."
