Hadith 16570
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Khafaf bin Ima’ (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led us in the Fajr prayer. When he raised his head from the bowing (ruku’) of the second rak’ah, he recited the Qunoot Nazilah and made this supplication: “May Allah’s curse be upon the tribe of Lihyan, Ra’l, and Dhakwaan, and the tribe of ‘Usayyah has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger. May Allah grant safety to the tribe of Aslam, and may Allah forgive the tribe of Ghifar.” Then he went into prostration, and after completing the prayer, he said to the people: “O people! By Allah! These words were not said by me, but Allah Himself has said them.”

A man from the people of Madinah narrates that once I prayed in a mosque of Banu Ghifar. When I had prayed two rak‘ahs and sat down, I spread out my left thigh and raised my index finger (because we had been told that the Prophet ﷺ, during the middle and at the end of the prayer, would spread out his left thigh, sit on his left side, place his left hand on his left thigh, raise his right foot, place his right hand on his right thigh, and raise his index finger, indicating with it towards the oneness of Allah). Sayyiduna Khafaf bin Ima’—who had the honor of being a companion of the Prophet ﷺ—saw me doing this. When I finished the prayer, he said to me, “Son! Why did you keep your finger raised like that?” I replied, “What is so surprising about it? I have seen everyone doing it this way.” He said, “You did right. The Prophet ﷺ, when he prayed, would do the same. The polytheists, seeing this, used to say that Muhammad ﷺ was casting a spell on us with his finger, but they were wrong. The Prophet ﷺ, by doing this, was expressing the oneness of Allah.”
