9 hadith
Hadith 16370
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh Khuzai that I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say: Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should honor his guest; and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should treat his neighbor well; and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good words or remain silent.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Hospitality is for three days, and the right (of special hospitality) is only for one day and one night. And it is not permissible for any man to stay with someone so long that he makes him sinful. The people asked: O Messenger of Allah! How will he make him sinful? He said: He stays with him while he has nothing left for hospitality.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated this statement three times, swearing an oath each time: "That person cannot be a believer." The companions asked: "O Messenger of Allah! Who is that person?" He replied: "The one whose neighbors are not safe from his harms." The companions asked the meaning of "harms" (boaiq), so he said: "Evil."

Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh says that once ‘Amr bin Sa‘id was sending an army towards Makkah Mukarramah. I said, “O Amir, I seek your permission to narrate a hadith of the Messenger of Allah which he stated on the second day of the conquest of Makkah. I heard it with my own ears, remembered it with my heart, and saw the Messenger of Allah saying it with my own eyes. After praising Allah, he said: ‘Allah has made Makkah Mukarramah a sanctuary; people have not made it a sanctuary. Therefore, whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not shed blood here, nor should he cut its trees. If anyone argues for the permissibility of bloodshed here by citing the fighting of the Prophet (ﷺ), then say to him that Allah had granted His Messenger a special permission, and that too was only for one hour of the day. Now its sanctity has returned as it was yesterday. Convey this command to those who are present and those who are absent.’”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh that I heard with my own ears the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying this, and I saw with my own eyes: Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should treat his neighbor well. Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should honor his guest according to what is right. The companions asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by "according to what is right"? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Hospitality is for three days, and "according to what is right" (a special, elaborate invitation) is only for one day and one night. Whatever is beyond that is charity upon him. And whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good words or remain silent. And it is not permissible for any man to stay with someone to such an extent that he makes him sinful.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If a person's blood is shed or he is wounded, he has the choice of one of three things: either he takes retribution (qisas), or he accepts blood money (diyah), or he forgives. If he wants to choose a fourth option besides these, restrain his hand. If he chooses one of these three and then, acting rebelliously, kills (the offender), then for him is Hell, where he will abide forever.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh that on the day of the conquest of Makkah, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave us permission to fight Banu Bakr, so we took our revenge on them. At that time, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was still in Makkah. Then he ordered us to lay down our swords. The next day, a group of us encountered a man from Banu Hudhayl in the Sacred Sanctuary who was going to greet the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He had caused them much harm in the days of ignorance, and they were searching for him, so before he could reach the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and obtain a guarantee of safety for himself, they killed him. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was informed of this incident, he became extremely angry. By Allah, I have never seen the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in a more angry state than that. We hurried to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Umar, and Ali to request them to intercede for us, and we were trembling with fear for our destruction. After finishing the prayer, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up and praised Allah as is His due, then said: "As for what follows: Allah alone has made Makkah a sanctuary, not mankind. Even for me, fighting in it was made lawful only for a short time yesterday, and now it is as sacred as it was when Allah first made it a sanctuary. In the sight of Allah, the most rebellious of all people are three types: 1. The one who kills someone in the sanctuary. 2. The one who kills someone other than his own killer. 3. The one who seeks retribution for blood shed in the days of ignorance. By Allah, I will surely pay the blood money for the person whom you killed." Thus, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) paid his blood money.

It is narrated from Abu Shurayh that when Amr bin Sa'id intended to send his army towards Makkah to confront Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair, he went to him and spoke to him and informed him about the saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Then he came and sat in the gathering of his people, and I also went and sat with him. He narrated the hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and then, mentioning the reply of Amr bin Sa'id, said: I said to him, "O so-and-so, on the occasion of the conquest of Makkah, we were with the Prophet (peace be upon him). The day after the conquest of Makkah, the Banu Khuza'ah attacked a man from Banu Hudhayl and killed him. The slain man was a polytheist. The Prophet (peace be upon him) stood among us to deliver a sermon and said: 'O people, Allah declared Makkah a sanctuary on the day He created the heavens and the earth, so it will remain a sanctuary until the Day of Resurrection. It is not permissible for anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day to shed blood therein or to cut down its trees. It was not made lawful for anyone before me, nor will it be made lawful for anyone after me, and it was made lawful for me only for a short period because of Allah's wrath upon its people. Beware! Its sanctity has returned as it was yesterday. Let those who are present convey this to those who are absent. And if anyone among you says that the Prophet (peace be upon him) also fought in Makkah, then say: Allah made it lawful for the Prophet (peace be upon him), not for you. O group of Khuza'ah, now withhold your hands from killing, for it is enough. For the person you killed before this, I will pay his blood money. But after my standing in this place, whoever kills anyone, the heirs of the slain will have the choice of two things: either to take retribution from the killer or to accept blood money.' After that, the Prophet (peace be upon him) paid the blood money for the man whom Banu Khuza'ah had killed." Hearing this hadith, Amr bin Sa'id said to Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh, "Old man, go back. We know its sanctity better than you. This sanctity cannot protect a blood-shedder, one who abandons obedience, or one who withholds jizyah." I said to him, "I was present at that time, you were absent, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded us to convey it to those who were absent. So I have conveyed this command. Now it is up to you and your actions."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Among all people, the most rebellious in the sight of Allah are three types of people: 1. The one who kills someone in the Haram (sanctuary). 2. The one who kills someone other than his own killer. 3. The one who seeks retribution for blood from the time of ignorance. And by Allah, I will surely pay the blood money for the person whom you have killed. Thus, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) paid his blood money.
