It is narrated from Sayyiduna Rashid bin Hubaysh that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit Sayyiduna ‘Ubadah bin Samit when he was ill. He said: "Do you know who are the martyrs of my Ummah?" The people remained silent. Sayyiduna ‘Ubadah said to the people, "Sit me up with support." The people sat him up. He said, "O Messenger of Allah! The one who is patient and seeks reward for it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In that case, the martyrs of my Ummah will be very few. Being killed in the way of Allah is martyrdom, dying in a plague is martyrdom, drowning in the sea is martyrdom, and dying of a stomach disease is also martyrdom. And a woman who dies in the state of childbirth, her child will take her by the hand into Paradise." The narrator named Abu ‘Awwam has also included in this those who die by burning (such as the key-bearer of Bayt al-Maqdis) and those who die in a flood.
