It is narrated from Sayyiduna Talha that once I arrived in Madinah Munawwarah and I had no acquaintances there. So, I came and stayed with a man on a platform called Suffah. That man and I used to divide only one mudd of dates between us daily. One day, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the prayer. After finishing the prayer, one of the people of Suffah said, "O Messenger of Allah! The dates have set our stomachs on fire and rashes have appeared on our bodies." Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit and, delivering a sermon, said: "By Allah, if I had bread and meat with me, I would have fed you that as well. Soon you will receive all these things, so much so that you will have large bowls and slaves, and you will have clothes to wear like those of the Ka'bah." After that, he shared our grief for only eighteen days. Until then, the best thing we had received was these very dates.
