Sayyiduna Dhi’l-Jawshan says that before accepting Islam, I came to the service of the Prophet (peace be upon him) after he had finished with the people of Badr. I brought with me the foal of my horse. I came and said, “O Muhammad, I have brought you the foal of my horse so that you may buy it.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “At the moment, I have no need for it. However, if you wish, I can give you some Badr shields in exchange for it.” I said, “Today, I would not give this horse even in exchange for a slave.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Then I have no need for it either.” Then he said, “O Dhi’l-Jawshan, why do you not become a Muslim so that you may be among the earliest people of this religion?” I said, “No.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked, “Why?” I replied, “I have seen that your people have deprived you of your right.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked, “Do you not know anything about those killed at Badr?” I said, “I know. Will you be able to overcome and subdue Makkah?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “If you live, you will surely see that day.” Then he said to Sayyiduna Bilal, “Take his bag and fill it with Ajwa dates so that he has provisions for the journey.” When I turned my back to leave, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “He is the best among Banu Amir.” I was still with my family in Ghuz when a rider came. I asked, “Where are you going?” He said, “I am coming from Makkah.” I asked, “What is the situation of the people?” He said, “The Prophet (peace be upon him) has prevailed over them.” I expressed regret and said, “If I had become Muslim that day and asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) for the city called Hira, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would have given it to me.”
