It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Tamimah Hijimi that once I met the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on one of the roads of Madinah Munawwarah. At that time, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing a woolen waistcloth whose edges were puffed up. I greeted him saying, "Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "‘Alaikas-salam’ is the greeting for the dead." Then I asked about the waistcloth, "Up to where should I tie my waistcloth?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) removed the cloth from his shin bone and said, "Tie it up to here. If you cannot do that, then tie it a little below this. If you cannot do that, then tie it up to the ankles. If you cannot even do that, then Allah does not like any boastful, arrogant person."
Then I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about virtue. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Do not consider any good deed insignificant, even if you give someone a rope or a shoelace, or draw water from your bucket into the vessel of someone who asks for water, or remove something from the road that is causing them harm, or meet your brother with a cheerful face, or greet your brother when you meet him, or show affection and love to those who are considered strangers in the land. And if someone abuses you and taunts you with something about yourself that you know, and you also know something similar about him, then do not taunt him with that flaw. This will be a source of reward for you and a source of burden for him. And act upon that which your ears like to hear, and avoid that which your ears do not like to hear."
