Musnad Ahmad

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Malik bin Nadlah that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me in a disheveled state and asked: "Do you have any wealth?" I replied: "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What kind of wealth?" I replied: "Allah has granted me all kinds of wealth, such as goats and camels, etc." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then the effects of Allah's blessings and honor should be visible on you."

Affan narrated to us, Shu’bah narrated to us, Abu Ishaq informed us, he said: I heard Abu al-Ahwas narrating from his father, he said: I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and I was in a shabby state. He said: “Do you have wealth?” I said: Yes. He said: “What is your wealth?” He said: Of all kinds of wealth: horses, camels, slaves, and sheep. He said: “If Allah, Mighty and Majestic, gives you wealth, then let it be seen on you.” He said: “Do the camels of your people give birth to ones with sound ears, and then you take a blade and cut them, or you cut them and say: ‘These are bahir’ and you split their skins and say: ‘These are surm,’ and you make them forbidden for yourself and your family?” He said: I said: Yes. He said: “All that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has given you is lawful for you. And the arm of Allah is stronger, and the blade of Allah is sharper.” And sometimes he said it, and sometimes he did not say it, and sometimes he said: “The arm of Allah is stronger than your arm, and the blade of Allah is sharper than your blade.” He said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, a man with whom I stayed did not show me hospitality nor honor me, then he stayed with me; should I show him hospitality or repay him for what he did? He said: “Rather, show him hospitality.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: What kind of wealth do you have? Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Is it not the case that in your tribe, when someone has a camel born here with sound ears, you take a razor and cut its ear and say this is Bahira, sometimes you skin them and say this is Sarm, and sometimes you declare them forbidden for your family? He replied: Yes, it is so. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Whatever Allah has granted you is all lawful. Allah’s power is greater and Allah’s razor is sharper. I asked: O Messenger of Allah! Tell me, if I go as a guest to someone and he neither honors me nor shows hospitality, then if that same person comes to me as a guest, should I treat him the same way he treated me, or should I show him hospitality? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: You should show him hospitality.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Malik bin Nadlah that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There are three levels of hands. The hand of Allah is the highest, and below it is the hand of the giver, and the hand of the beggar is the lowest. Therefore, give away surplus things and do not become helpless regarding yourself.
