حَدِيثُ مَعْنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ السُّلَمِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ
Hadith of Ma'n ibn Yazid al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith 15860
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا مُصْعَبُ بْنُ الْمِقْدَامِ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَابِقٍ , قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْجُوَيْرِيَةِ ، أَنَّ مَعْنَ بْنَ يَزِيدَ حَدَّثَهُ ، قَالَ : بَايَعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَا وَأَبِي وَجَدِّي ، وَخَطَبَ عَلَيَّ فَأَنْكَحَنِي ، وَخَاصَمْتُ إِلَيْهِ ، فَكَانَ أَبِي يَزِيدُ خَرَجَ بِدَنَانِيرَ يَتَصَدَّقُ بِهَا ، فَوَضَعَهَا عِنْدَ رَجُلٍ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ ، فَأَخَذْتُهَا ، فَأَتَيْتُهُ بِهَا ، فَقَالَ : وَاللَّهِ مَا إِيَّاكَ أَرَدْتُ بِهَا , فَخَاصَمْتُهُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " لَكَ مَا نَوَيْتَ يَا يَزِيدُ ، وَلَكَ يَا مَعْنُ مَا أَخَذْتَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ma'n bin Yazid that I, my father, and my grandfather pledged allegiance to the Prophet (ﷺ). Then the Prophet (ﷺ) delivered the sermon for my marriage proposal and married me. My father Yazid took out some dinars with the intention of giving charity and placed them in the hand of a man in the mosque. That man was me. I took those dinars and came to him, so he said, "I did not intend to give these dinars to you." I brought this case to the Prophet (ﷺ), so the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Yazid, you have received the reward of your intention, and Ma'n, what has come into your hand is yours."
Hadith 15861
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَمَّادٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ كُلَيْبٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي سُهَيْلُ بْنُ ذِرَاعٍ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مَعْنَ بْنَ يَزِيدَ أَوْ أَبَا مَعْنٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " اجْتَمِعُوا فِي مَسَاجِدِكُمْ ، فَإِذَا اجْتَمَعَ قَوْمٌ فَلْيُؤْذِنُونِي " ، قَالَ : فَاجْتَمَعْنَا أَوَّلَ النَّاسِ ، فَأَتَيْنَاهُ ، فَجَاءَ يَمْشِي مَعَنَا حَتَّى جَلَسَ إِلَيْنَا ، فَتَكَلَّمَ مُتَكَلِّمٌ مِنَّا ، فَقَالَ : الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي لَيْسَ لِلْحَمْدِ دُونَهُ مُقْتَصَرٌ ، وَلَيْسَ وَرَاءَهُ مَنْفَذٌ ، وَنَحْوًا مِنْ هَذَا ، فَغَضِبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَامَ ، فَتَلَاوَمْنَا ، وَلَامَ بَعْضُنَا بَعْضًا ، فَقُلْنَا : خَصَّنَا اللَّهُ بِهِ أَنْ أَتَانَا أَوَّلَ النَّاسِ ، وَأَنْ فَعَلَ وَفَعَلَ , قَالَ : فَأَتَيْنَاهُ ، فَوَجَدْنَاهُ فِي مَسْجِدِ بَنِي فُلَانٍ ، فَكَلَّمْنَاهُ ، فَأَقْبَلَ يَمْشِي مَعَنَا ، حَتَّى جَلَسَ فِي مَجْلِسِهِ الَّذِي كَانَ فِيهِ أَوْ قَرِيبًا مِنْهُ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ لِلَّهِ ، مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ جَعَلَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ ، وَمَا شَاءَ جَعَلَ خَلْفَهُ ، وَإِنَّ مِنَ الْبَيَانِ سِحْرًا " ، ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا فَأَمَرَنَا ، وَكَلَّمَنَا ، وَعَلَّمَنَا .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ma’n that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Gather all the people in the mosque, and when the people have gathered, inform me. So we were the first to arrive. After a short while, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came in a dignified manner and graced us with his presence. Meanwhile, one of us began speaking with a boastful tone. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry and stood up. We began to blame each other, saying that Allah had granted us the distinction of being the first to arrive, and so-and-so person did this act. Then we went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and found him in the mosque of Banu so-and-so. We tried to please the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he came with us and sat down in the previous gathering place and said: All praise is due to Allah; He brings forward whom He wills and puts back whom He wills, and some statements have the effect of magic. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards us and gave us some commands and taught us some things.
Hadith 15862
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمُ بْنُ كُلَيْبٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الْجُوَيْرِيَةِ ، قَالَ : " أَصَبْتُ جَرَّةً حَمْرَاءَ فِيهَا دَنَانِيرُ فِي إِمَارَةِ مُعَاوِيَةَ فِي أَرْضِ الرُّومِ ، قَالَ : وَعَلَيْنَا رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ يُقَالُ لَهُ : مَعْنُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ ، قَالَ : فَأَتَيْتُ بِهَا يَقْسِمُهَا بَيْنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ ، فَأَعْطَانِي مِثْلَ مَا أَعْطَى رَجُلًا مِنْهُمْ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : لَوْلَا أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَرَأَيْتُهُ يَفْعَلُهُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " لَا نَفْلَ إِلَّا بَعْدَ الْخُمُسِ " إِذًا لَأَعْطَيْتُكَ . قَالَ : ثُمَّ أَخَذَ فَعَرَضَ عَلَيَّ مِنْ نَصِيبِهِ ، فَأَبَيْتُ عَلَيْهِ , قُلْتُ : مَا أَنَا بِأَحَقَّ بِهِ مِنْكَ .
Abu Juwayriyah says that during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Amir Muawiyah, I found a red jug filled with dinars in the land of Rome. Our commander was from Banu Sulaym, and he was a companion of the Prophet (ﷺ), whose name was Ma'n bin Yazid. I took that jug to him so that he could distribute it among the Muslims. Accordingly, he gave me only as much as he gave to an ordinary person. Then he said, "If I had not heard and seen the Prophet (ﷺ) saying and doing that after the khums, there is no further reward, I would have given all of this to you." Then he offered to give me his own share, but I refused to take it and said, "I am not more deserving of it than you."
Hadith 15863
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ ، وَسُرَيْجُ بْنُ النُّعْمَانِ , قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْجُوَيْرِيَةِ . حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْجُوَيْرِيَةِ ، عَنْ مَعْنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، قَالَ : بَايَعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَا , وَأَبِي , وَجَدِّي ، وَخَاصَمْتُ إِلَيْهِ ، " فَأَفْلَجَنِي ، وَخَطَبَ عَلَيَّ ، فَأَنْكَحَنِي " .

Hadith 15863M
حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ وَسُرَيْحُ بْنُ النُّعْمَانِ قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ أَبِي الْجُوَيْرِيَةِ. حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْجُوَيْرِيَةِ عَنْ مَعْنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ قَالَ : بَايَعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنَا وَأَبِي وَجَدِّي ، وَخَاصَمْتُ إِلَيْهِ، فَأَفْلَجَنِي، وَخَطَبَ عَلَيَّ، فَأَنْكَحَنِي»
Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik and Surayh ibn al-Nu'man narrated to us, they said: Abu Awanah narrated to us from Abu al-Juwayriyah. Affan narrated to us, he said: Abu Awanah narrated to us, he said: Abu al-Juwayriyah narrated to us from Ma'n ibn Yazid, he said: I gave allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, myself, my father, and my grandfather, and I brought a dispute to him, so he judged in my favor, and he delivered a sermon for me, and he married me.
