It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that, in terms of riding and expenses, I was never as well-off in any expedition as I was in this one. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) set out, I thought that I would prepare my travel provisions the next day and join the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). So I started preparing, but evening came and I could not finish. The same happened on the third day. I said to myself, "Alas! People have already covered three days' journey." Thinking this, I stayed behind. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) returned, people began to present various excuses. I too presented myself in the court of Prophethood and stood before the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: "I never had more ease in terms of riding and expenses in any expedition than in this one." Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) turned away from me and forbade people from talking to us. He also ordered regarding our wives that they should stay away from us. One day, I climbed the wall of my house and saw Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him). I said to Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), "O Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), I ask you by Allah, do you know if I have ever deceived Allah and His Messenger on any day?" But he remained silent and did not speak to me. One day, while I was in this state, I heard someone calling my name from the top of a hill until he came near me and said, "Glad tidings for Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him)!"

Sayyiduna Ka‘b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Except for the expedition of Tabuk, I did not stay behind from any battle with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), though I did miss the Battle of Badr. And those who did not participate in Badr were not blamed, because the Messenger of Allah had only set out to intercept the caravan of Quraysh, not with the intention of fighting, but Allah caused the Muslims to confront their enemies. I was also present with the Prophet on the night of the Pledge of ‘Aqabah, where we all together strengthened the covenant of Islam, and I would not wish to exchange that pledge for being present at Badr, even though the Battle of Badr is more famous among the people.
My story is that at the time of this expedition, I had never been as wealthy and well-off as I was then. By Allah, I had two camels for this battle, and I had never had two mounts for any battle before. The Messenger of Allah’s practice was that if he intended to go on a campaign, he would conceal his real objective by mentioning another destination. But when the time for the Battle of Tabuk came, since it was extremely hot, a long, waterless desert had to be crossed, and there was to be a confrontation with a large enemy, he openly informed the Muslims to prepare for war and made his intention clear to the people. The Muslims were very numerous, and there was no register in which names were recorded. Whoever did not wish to participate in the battle thought that his absence would remain hidden unless revelation came regarding him.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) decided on this expedition when the fruits had ripened and the trees provided ample shade. So the Messenger of Allah and all the Muslims began preparing for war. I too would go out every morning with the intention of preparing for battle, but would return in the evening without having accomplished anything. I would think to myself that there was still plenty of time and that I could do it later. In this procrastination, time passed, and the Muslims made great efforts and completed their preparations. One morning, the Messenger of Allah set out with the Muslims, and I had still not made any preparations, but I thought to myself that in a day or two I would get ready and join the Muslims. When, on the next day, the Muslims had gone far from Madinah, I set out with the intention of preparing, but returned without having done anything. My laziness continued, and the Muslims quickly advanced far ahead. I intended to catch up with them, but it was not Allah’s will. If only I had joined the Muslims!
After the Messenger of Allah had departed, whenever I went out and mingled with people, it grieved me to see that only the hypocrites and those weak people whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had excused were left behind; no one else was to be seen. On the way, the Messenger of Allah did not remember me until he reached Tabuk. There, while sitting among the people, he said: “What has Ka‘b bin Malik done?” A man replied, “O Messenger of Allah! He was looking at his two cloaks and that is why he did not come.” Mu‘adh bin Jabal said, “By Allah, you have said a bad thing! O Messenger of Allah! We only know good of him.” The Prophet remained silent.
Ka‘b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When I heard that the Prophet was returning, I became worried and thought of lying, and considered how I might escape the anger of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I consulted all the wise people in my household. Meanwhile, I learned that the Messenger of Allah was about to arrive. I abandoned the idea of lying altogether, realizing that I could not escape the Prophet’s anger by mixing in falsehood, so I firmly resolved to speak the truth.
In the morning, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, and his practice was that when he returned from a journey, he would first go to the mosque and pray two rak‘ahs, and then sit and talk with the people. The Prophet did just that. Those who had stayed behind from the battle began to come and swear oaths and present their excuses. They were a little over eighty in number. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted their outward excuses, took their pledge, prayed for their forgiveness, and left their inner state to Allah.
After all of them, I came and greeted him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled in anger and said, “Come closer.” I went closer until I sat before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he said, “Why did you stay behind?”

Hajjaj narrated to us, he said: Laith ibn Sa'd narrated to us, he said: 'Uqayl ibn Khalid narrated to me, from Ibn Shihab, that he said: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Ka'b ibn Malik informed me, that 'Abd Allah ibn Ka'b ibn Malik, who was the guide of Ka'b from among his sons when he became blind, said: I heard Ka'b ibn Malik narrating his story when he stayed behind from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in the expedition of Tabuk. Ka'b ibn Malik said: I never stayed behind from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in any expedition he undertook except in the expedition of Tabuk, except that I had also stayed behind from the expedition of Badr, but he did not blame anyone who stayed behind from it, because the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had only gone out intending the caravan of Quraysh, in which was Abu Sufyan ibn Harb and a group from Quraysh. Then he said: "Come," so I came walking until I sat before him. He said: "What kept you back? Did you not buy your mount?" I said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. By Allah, if I were sitting before anyone else from the people of this world, I would think that I could escape his anger with an excuse, and I have indeed been given eloquence. Then he mentioned the hadith, and he said in it: Indeed, I hope for Allah's pardon. And he said: So I said to my wife: Go to your family, and stay with them until Allah decides concerning this matter. And he said: I heard the voice of a caller who had ascended the top of Mount Sal‘ shouting at the top of his voice: O Ka'b ibn Malik, rejoice! He said: So I fell down in prostration, and I knew that relief had come. And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, informed the people of our repentance when he prayed the dawn prayer. Then he mentioned the meaning of the hadith of the nephew of Ibn Shihab, and he said in it: And I said to myself: Did he move his lips in returning the greeting?

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Hadrad owed him some debt. Once, they met on the road and Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) caught hold of him. Due to mutual argument, their voices were raised. Meanwhile, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gestured to me and said, "Forgive him half of his debt." So he forgave half and took the remaining half of the money.
Hadith 15792
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The soul of a Muslim resides in the form of birds on the trees of Paradise until the Day of Resurrection when Allah will return it to its body.
Hadith 15793
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent him to Aws bin Hadthan during the days of Tashreeq to announce that no one except a believer will enter Paradise, and the days of Tashreeq are days of eating and drinking.
Hadith 15794
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: If two hungry wolves are let loose among a flock of sheep, they will not cause as much mischief as the greed for wealth and status causes in a man's religion.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the beginning of Ramadan, when a fasting person slept at night, eating, drinking, and approaching one's wife would become forbidden for him until he broke his fast the next day. Once, Sayyiduna Umar spent some time at night with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and then returned home to find his wife sleeping. He intended to fulfill his desire with her, so she said, "I had fallen asleep." Sayyiduna Umar said, "Where had you slept?" Then he fulfilled his desire with her. The same happened with Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). The next day, when Sayyiduna Umar informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of this incident, Allah revealed this verse: "Allah knows that you were betraying yourselves, so He turned to you and forgave you."
Hadith 15796
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Denounce the polytheists through poetry, for a Muslim strives with both his life and his wealth. By Him in Whose hand is my soul, the poetry you recite about the polytheists is as if you are showering them with arrows.

Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), who was among the participants of the Pledge of Aqabah and those who pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) therein, says: We set out with some polytheist pilgrims of our people. At that time, we used to pray and understood the religion. With us was Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Ma’rur, who was the eldest among us and our leader. When we prepared for the journey and left from Madinah Munawwarah, Bara’ said, “People, by Allah, an opinion has occurred to me. I do not know whether you will agree with me or not.” We asked him, “What is that opinion?” He said, “My opinion is that I should not pray with my back towards the Ka'bah.” We said to him, “We have learned from our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he prays facing towards Shaam (Jerusalem). We will not oppose him.” He said, “I will pray facing the Ka'bah.” We said, “We will not do so.” Thus, when the time for prayer came, we would pray facing Shaam, and he would pray facing the Ka'bah, until we reached Makkah Mukarramah.
When we entered the mosque, we saw Sayyiduna Abbas sitting, and with him was the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). We also greeted and sat down. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Sayyiduna Abbas, “O Abu Fadl, do you recognize these two?” He said, “Yes, they are the leaders of their people, and this is Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). By Allah, I have not forgotten the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at that time, that he said, ‘Ka'b, the poet.’” He (Ka'b) said, “Yes.” Then Sayyiduna Bara’ said, “O Messenger of Allah! When I set out on this journey, Allah had already blessed me with the guidance of Islam. I thought that I should not turn my back towards this building (the Ka'bah), so I kept praying facing it, but my companions opposed me in this matter, which caused some doubt in my heart about it. Now, what is your opinion?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “You were already established on one Qiblah; if you had remained on it, it would have been better.” After that, Bara’ continued to pray facing the Qiblah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), although that was not the case; we know more about them.
Then we set out for Hajj and, during the middle days of Tashreeq, made an appointment to meet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at a mountain pass. When we completed Hajj and the night came which we had promised to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), with us was one of our leaders, Abu Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), Abdullah bin Amr bin Haram. We had kept our matter hidden from the polytheists who came with us. So we spoke to him and said, “O Abu Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), you are one of our leaders. We do not want you, because of the religion you are upon, to become fuel for Hell tomorrow.” Then I invited him to Islam and informed him about our scheduled meeting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), upon which he accepted Islam and came with us to the mountain pass, where he was also appointed as a Naqeeb (leader).
When we sat in our place, Sayyiduna Abbas was the first to speak and said, “O group of Khazraj, you know the status Muhammad has among us. Among our people, those whose opinion is still like ours, we have protected him from them until now.” Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began his speech, recited some verses, invited to Allah, encouraged Islam, and said, “I take your pledge on the condition that you will protect me as you protect your wives and children.” Hearing this, Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Ma’rur took the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, “Yes, by the One Who sent you with the truth, we will protect you as we protect ourselves. O Messenger of Allah! Take our pledge.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Select twelve men from among yourselves who will be leaders (Naqeeb) of their people.” So they selected twelve men, nine from Khazraj and three from Aws. Then all the people pledged allegiance one after another.
When we had pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Satan stood at the edge of the mountain pass and shouted in a loud voice, “O people of the camp, take heed of Mudhammam (Allah forbid, meaning the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) and the irreligious ones with him; they are gathering to fight you!” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)...
