It is narrated from Sayyiduna Aswad bin Sari’ that once I presented myself before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I have composed some verses in praise of my Lord and in your praise. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Let me hear, what have you said in praise of your Lord? I began to recite the verses. Meanwhile, a wheat-colored man came and sought permission from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped me in the middle. After talking for a short while, that man left. I started reciting the verses again. After a short while, the same man came again and sought permission to enter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again stopped me in the middle. That person did the same thing three times. I asked: O Messenger of Allah! Who is this for whom you make me fall silent? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is Umar bin Khattab. He is a person who does not like false things.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Aswad bin Sari’ that on the occasion of the Battle of Hunayn, the Prophet (peace be upon him) sent out a detachment: they fought against the polytheists, and the fighting extended to the killing of their children. When those people returned, the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked them, “What compelled you to kill the children?” They replied, “O Messenger of Allah! They were the children of the polytheists.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Are not the best among you the children of the polytheists? By Him in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, every soul that is born in this world is born upon the natural disposition (fitrah) until its tongue expresses what is within it.”
