Hadith of As-Sa'ib ibn Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith 15506
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا , ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، أَنَّ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَطَاءٍ حَدَّثَهُ , قَالَ : رَأَيْتُ السَّائِبَ يَشُمُّ ثَوْبَهُ ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ : مِمَّ ذَاكَ ؟ فَقَالَ : إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " لَا وُضُوءَ إِلَّا مِنْ رِيحٍ أَوْ سَمَاعٍ " .
Muhammad bin Umar says that once I saw Sayyiduna Saib smelling his garment, so I asked him the reason for this. He replied that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Wudu does not become obligatory until an odor is perceived or a sound is heard."
