Ahadith of Abu Mahdhurah the Mu'adhdhin (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith 15376
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي عُثْمَانُ بْنُ السَّائِبِ مَوْلَاهُمْ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ السَّائِبِ مَوْلَى أَبِي مَحْذُورَةَ ، وَعَنْ أُمِّ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي مَحْذُورَةَ ، أَنَّهُمَا سَمِعَاهُ مِنْ أَبِي مَحْذُورَةَ , قَالَ أَبُو مَحْذُورَةَ : خَرَجْتُ فِي عَشَرَةِ فِتْيَانٍ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَهُوَ أَبْغَضُ النَّاسِ إِلَيْنَا , فَأَذَّنُوا ، فَقُمْنَا نُؤَذِّنُ نَسْتَهْزِئُ بِهِمْ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " ائْتُونِي بِهَؤُلَاءِ الْفِتْيَانِ " ، فَقَالَ : " أَذِّنُوا " , فَأَذَّنُوا ، فَكُنْتُ أَحَدَهُمْ , فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " نَعَمْ هَذَا الَّذِي سَمِعْتُ صَوْتَهُ ، اذْهَبْ فَأَذِّنْ لِأَهْلِ مَكَّةَ ، فَمَسَحَ عَلَى نَاصِيَتِهِ ، وَقَالَ : " قُلْ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ مَرَّتَيْنِ ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ ، ثُمَّ ارْجِعْ فَاشْهَدْ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ مَرَّتَيْنِ ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ مَرَّتَيْنِ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ، وَإِذَا أَذَّنْتَ بِالْأَوَّلِ مِنَ الصُّبْحِ ، فَقُلْ : الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ ، الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ ، وَإِذَا أَقَمْتَ فَقُلْهَا مَرَّتَيْنِ ، قَدْ قَامَتْ الصَّلَاةُ ، قَدْ قَامَتْ الصَّلَاةُ ، أَسَمِعْتَ ؟ " , قَالَ : وَكَانَ أَبُو مَحْذُورَةَ لَا يَجُزُّ نَاصِيَتَهُ ، وَلَا يُفَرِّقُهَا ، لِأَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَسَحَ عَلَيْهَا , حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عُثْمَانُ بْنُ السَّائِبِ ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي مَحْذُورَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مَحْذُورَةَ , قَالَ : لَمَّا رَجَعَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى حُنَيْنٍ ، خَرَجْتُ عَاشِرَ عَشَرَةٍ ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ , إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ " مَرَّتَيْنِ فَقَطْ ، وقَالَ رَوْحٌ : أَيْضًا مَرَّتَيْنِ .
Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah says that once I went out with ten young men, and at that time the Prophet (ﷺ) was also with us, but among all the people, we were the most disliked by him because we had not yet accepted Islam. When the Muslims gave the adhan, we also stood up and started imitating them and mocking them. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Bring these young men to me. And he said to us: Now give the adhan. So everyone gave the adhan, and I was among them. When the Prophet (ﷺ) heard my voice, he said: How beautiful is his voice! Go and give the adhan for the people of Makkah. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) passed his blessed hand over his forehead and said: Say "Allahu Akbar" four times, say "Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah" twice, say "Ashhadu anna Muhammadur Rasulullah" twice, say "Hayya 'ala-s-Salah" and "Hayya 'ala-l-Falah" each twice, then say "Allahu Akbar" twice, and then say "La ilaha illallah." And when you give the morning adhan, say "As-salatu khayrun minan-nawm" twice, and when you say the iqamah, say "Qad qamatis salah" twice. It is narrated that after this incident, Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah never cut the hair on his forehead nor parted it, because the Prophet (ﷺ) had passed his hand over that place.
Hadith 15377
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ : (۱) أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عُثْمَانُ بْنُ السَّائِبِ عَنْ أُمِّ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي مَحْذُورَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي مَحْذُورَةَ قَالَ : لَمَّا رَجَعَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِلَى حُنَيْنٍ، خَرَجْتُ عَاشِرَ عَشَرَةٍ : فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ: «اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ مَرَّتَيْنِ قَطٍ (۲). وَ قَالَ رَوْحٌ أَيْضًا مَرَّتَيْنِ
Muhammad ibn Bakr narrated to us: (1) Ibn Jurayj informed us, he said: ‘Uthman ibn al-Sa’ib informed me from Umm ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Abi Mahdhurah, from Abi Mahdhurah who said: When the Prophet ﷺ returned to Hunayn, I went out as the tenth of ten: then he mentioned the hadith except that he said: “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar” twice only (2). And Rawh also said twice.
Hadith 15378
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ، قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ : لَيْسَ هُوَ الْفَرَّاءَ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلْمَانَ ، عَنْ أَبِي مَحْذُورَةَ , قَالَ : " كُنْتُ أُؤَذِّنُ فِي زَمَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي صَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ ، فَإِذَا قُلْتُ : حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ ، قُلْتُ : الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ , الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ ، الْأَذَانُ الْأَوَّلُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah that during the blessed era of the Prophet (peace be upon him), he used to give the call to prayer (adhan) for Fajr. When he would finish saying "Hayya 'ala al-falah," he would say "As-salatu khayrun min an-nawm" twice in the adhan.
Hadith 15379
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا سُرَيْجُ بْنُ النُّعْمَانِ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَارِثُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي مَحْذُورَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ , قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، عَلِّمْنِي سُنَّةَ الْأَذَانِ ، فَمَسَحَ بِمُقَدَّمِ رَأْسِي ، وَقَالَ : " قُلْ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، تَرْفَعُ بِهَا صَوْتَكَ , ثُمَّ تَقُولُ : أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ ، تَخْفِضُ بِهَا صَوْتَكَ ، ثُمَّ تَرْفَعُ صَوْتَكَ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ مَرَّتَيْنِ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ , حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ مَرَّتَيْنِ ، فَإِنْ كَانَ صَلَاةُ الصُّبْحِ , قُلْتَ : الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ ، الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ مَرَّتَيْنِ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah says that once I submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Teach me the Adhan. The Prophet (peace be upon him) passed his blessed hand over my forehead and said: Say "Allahu Akbar" loudly twice, then say "Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah" twice, then say "Ashhadu anna Muhammadur Rasulullah" in a low voice twice, then say it loudly twice, then say "Hayya 'ala-s-Salah" and "Hayya 'ala-l-Falah" twice each, and when you give the morning Adhan, say "As-salatu khayrun minan-nawm" twice, and at the end say "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar" and "La ilaha illallah."
Hadith 15380
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ , قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي مَحْذُورَةَ ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ مُحَيْرِيزٍ أَخْبَرَهُ ، وَكَانَ يَتِيمًا فِي حَجْرِ أَبِي مَحْذُورَةَ , قَالَ رَوْحٌ : ابْنُ مِعْيَرٍ وَلَمْ يَقُلْهُ ابْنُ بَكْرٍ ، حِينَ جَهَّزَهُ إِلَى الشَّامِ , قَالَ : فَقُلْتُ لِأَبِي مَحْذُورَةَ : يَا عَمِّ إِنِّي خَارِجٌ إِلَى الشَّامِ ، وَأَخْشَى أَنْ أُسْأَلَ عَنْ تَأْذِينِكَ ، فَأَخْبَرَنِي أَنَّ أَبَا مَحْذُورَةَ قَالَ لَهُ : نَعَمْ خَرَجْتُ فِي نَفَرٍ ، فَكُنَّا بِبَعْضِ طَرِيقِ حُنَيْنٍ ، فَقَفَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ حُنَيْنٍ ، فَلَقِيَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِبَعْضِ الطَّرِيقِ ، فَأَذَّنَ مُؤَذِّنُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالصَّلَاةِ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَسَمِعْنَا صَوْتَ الْمُؤَذِّنِ وَنَحْنُ مُتَنَكِّبُونَ ، فَصَرَخْنَا نَحْكِيهِ ، وَنَسْتَهْزِئُ بِهِ ، فَسَمِعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الصَّوْتَ ، فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْنَا إِلَى أَنْ وَقَفْنَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَيُّكُمْ الَّذِي سَمِعْتُ صَوْتَهُ قَدْ ارْتَفَعَ ؟ " , فَأَشَارَ الْقَوْمُ كُلُّهُمْ إِلَيَّ وَصَدَقُوا ، فَأَرْسَلَ كُلَّهُمْ وَحَبَسَنِي ، فَقَالَ : " قُمْ فَأَذِّنْ بِالصَّلَاةِ " , فَقُمْتُ ، وَلَا شَيْءَ أَكْرَهُ إِلَيَّ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَا مِمَّا يَأْمُرُنِي بِهِ ، فَقُمْتُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَلْقَى إِلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ التَّأْذِينَ هُوَ نَفْسُهُ ، فَقَالَ : " قُلْ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ " ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي : " ارْجِعْ فَامْدُدْ مِنْ صَوْتِكَ " ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ " ، ثُمَّ دَعَانِي حِينَ قَضَيْتُ التَّأْذِينَ , فَأَعْطَانِي صُرَّةً فِيهَا شَيْءٌ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ ، ثُمَّ وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى نَاصِيَةِ أَبِي مَحْذُورَةَ ، ثُمَّ أَمَارَّهَا عَلَى وَجْهِهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ ، ثُمَّ مَرَّتَيْنِ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ ، ثُمَّ عَلَى كَبِدِهِ ، ثُمَّ بَلَغَتْ يَدُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سُرَّةَ أَبِي مَحْذُورَةَ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " بَارَكَ اللَّهُ فِيكَ " , فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ , مُرْنِي بِالتَّأْذِينِ بِمَكَّةَ ، فَقَالَ : " قَدْ أَمَرْتُكَ بِهِ " , وَذَهَبَ كُلُّ شَيْءٍ كَانَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ كَرَاهِيَةٍ ، وَعَادَ ذَلِكَ مَحَبَّةً لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , فَقَدِمْتُ عَلَى عَتَّابِ بْنِ أُسَيْدٍ ، عَامِلِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِمَكَّةَ ، فَأَذَّنْتُ مَعَهُ بِالصَّلَاةِ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَأَخْبَرَنِي ذَلِكَ مَنْ أَدْرَكْتُ مِنْ أَهْلِي مِمَّنْ أَدْرَكَ أَبَا مَحْذُورَةَ عَلَى نَحْوِ مَا أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَيْرِيزٍ .
Abdullah bin Muhairiz, who was raised by Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah, said at the time of departing for Syria, "Uncle, I fear that people will surely ask me about your incident of the adhan." So he narrated: Once, I went out with a group of young men. We were on the road to Hunain when we saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) returning. On the way, we encountered the Prophet (peace be upon him). When the time for prayer came, the mu’adhdhin gave the adhan, so we also stood up and started imitating him and mocking him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Bring these young men to me." And he asked us, "Which one of you was raising his voice the most?" All of them pointed towards me, and they were truthful in this. The Prophet (peace be upon him) let all of them go and kept me back. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Now give the adhan." So I stood up, but at that moment, in my eyes, the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his command were the most beloved of all. I stood up, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself taught me the words of the adhan and said: "Say Allahu Akbar twice, say Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah twice, say Ashhadu anna Muhammadur Rasulullah twice, then repeat these words loudly, say Hayya ‘ala-s-Salah twice and Hayya ‘ala-l-Falah twice, then say Allahu Akbar twice, and then say La ilaha illallah." When I finished giving the adhan, the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave me a pouch in which there was some silver. Then he placed his blessed hand on my forehead and passed it over my face twice, then to the front, then to my chest until his hand reached my navel. Then he said: "May Allah bless you." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Appoint me as the mu’adhdhin in Makkah." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "I order this." At that very moment, the dislike for the Prophet (peace be upon him) was removed from his heart and love took its place. Then I went to the governor of Makkah, Sayyiduna ‘Attab bin Asid, and informed him of the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) order. The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain.
Hadith 15381
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَامِرٌ الْأَحْوَلُ ، حَدَّثَنِي مَكْحُولٌ ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ مُحَيْرِيزٍ حَدَّثَهُ ، أَنَّ أَبَا مَحْذُورَةَ حَدَّثَهُ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " عَلَّمَهُ الْأَذَانَ تِسْعَ عَشْرَةَ كَلِمَةً ، وَالْإِقَامَةَ سَبْعَ عَشْرَةَ كَلِمَةً ، الْأَذَانُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ، وَالْإِقَامَةُ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ ، حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ ، قَدْ قَامَتْ الصَّلَاةُ قَدْ قَامَتْ الصَّلَاةُ ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah says that the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught him nineteen words for the adhan and seventeen words for the iqamah.
